Wings to Fly
Wings to Fly | Celia Barker Lottridge
2 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
In Ticket to Curlew, Sam Ferrier and his family moved to Canada and learned to respect their harsh new home and find beauty in its endless prairies. In this sequel, 11-year-old Josie, now well-settled in her new home, longs to have a friend her own age. So when a girl named Margaret moves to the area from England, Josie is thrilled to have a buddy for riding to school, exploring the mysterious, abandoned silver house, and dreaming about the future. But what does the future hold for a young girl in 1918? Could Josie fly airplanes like her heroine Katherine Stinson? Will she be a teacher like Miss Barnett? What if she becomes like Margaret s sad mother, who can t bear to even unpack her fine English china in the crude sod house that is her new prairie home? Wings to Fly tells the powerful and poignant story of a young girl facing her future in the dramatic Canadian wilderness."

This isn't so much of a #fictionnonfictionpairing, as it is a tree of books. I read Wings To Fly, discovered the amazing aviatrix Katharine Stinson & read up a ton on her & women in aviation leading up to & during WWI. As Stinson & her family trained male aviators in the war, that led me to read nonfiction on that topic which led to memoirs/bios which led to fiction written by men involved in WWI aviation. Oh, and all this led to a novel I wrote.

GlitteryOtters So, yes, many thanks to Celia Barker Lottridge for leading me down this path of study. #seasonsreadings2016 tagging other books pictured below in comments (where available in datatbase). I read a ton more on Stinson, but they were all out of print ILLs which I could not afford to buy at used prices, so only a couple are pictured here. 7y

GlitteryOtters (Additional credit to interest in this area of study goes to the late silent era & pre code era films about WWI, especially those starring my favorite actor, Richard Barthelmess who was equally interested in this area of study. Many thanks to Wayne State University for lending via ILL so many of the books I studied which aren't pictured here (this is about 5% of what I read on these topics) 7y

Three award winning books #SetInASmallTown...two excellent Canadian middle grade novels by Celia Barker Lottridge & a book of essays set in small town Michigan by my favorite local poet/essayist, one of the best writers it has been my pleasure to meet, Thomas Lynch. #photoadaynov16

RoyalBooksy I've always wanted to read this book and now I finally found it but I have a question. Can you read a book on litsy? 7y
GlitteryOtters @RoyalBooksy no, Litsy is basically a social media app (like book specific Twitter or Facebook). If you like this book and want to add it to your "to be read" list on Litsy, click the stack of books you see right below the post's text & you can put it in your list, to make it easier to keep track of what you want to read. 7y
