I Do It with the Lights On
I Do It with the Lights On: And 10 More Discoveries on the Road to a Blissfully Shame-Free Life | Whitney Way Thore
16 posts | 10 read | 23 to read
From the star of TLCs My Big Fat Fabulous Life and the YouTube sensation A Fat Girl Dancing comes an empowering memoir about letting go of your limitations and living the life you deserve. Right now. Whitney Way Thore stands five feet two inches tall and weighs well over three hundred pounds, and she is totally, completely, and truly . . . happy. But she wasnt always the vivacious, confident woman you see on TV. Growing up as a dancer, Whitney felt the pressure to be thin, a desire that grew into an obsession as she got older. From developing an eating disorder as a teenager, to extreme weight gain in college, to her ongoing struggle with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), Whitney reveals her fight to overcome the darkest moments in her life. She holds nothing back, opening up about the depths of her depression as well as her resilience in the face of constant harassment and mistreatment. Now Whitney is on top of the world and taking no BS (Body Shame, of course). And shes sharing the steps she took to get there and the powerful message behind her successful No Body Shame campaign. She even reveals her favorite F word (its probably not what you think), the thrill of doing it with the lights on, and the story behind the Fat Girl Dancing video that started it all. Exuberant and utterly honest, I Do It with the Lights On is the inspiring story of how Whitney finally discovered her fabulousness when she stepped off the scale and into her life, embracing herself unconditionallybody, heart, and soul. From the Hardcover edition.

I LOVE this book! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ If you already have a fondness for Whitney- her smarts, her humor, her feminism and her No Body Shame campaign, you will enjoy this book immensely. If you don‘t , it‘ll intensify whatever feelings you have about her message (and her laugh). ❤️❤️❤️

@toddred29 and I are traveling back to Iowa from South Dakota for his side family Christmas. Roads are clear, the countryside is beautiful and Whitney‘s #Audible is keeping us laughing. ❄️☃️❄️

tracey38 Have a good trip! 5y
staci.reads Where in Iowa are you? The roads around us in Northern Iowa aren't too bad, but my parents drove home from southern Iowa yesterday and it was treacherous! 5y
BlameJennyJane Thank you @tracey38 ! We had a great trip and made it home safely. 😊 5y
BlameJennyJane @staci.reads when I took the pics we were in the middle of South Dakota, then there was barely a dusting ‘til Omaha... but after that it was snow covered all the way home. We live in the Des Moines metro and were lucky enough to get home after the roads were all but dry. Glad your parents made it safely! 5y

I‘ve been in a bit of a non-fiction reading slump lately but Whitney is bringing me right out of it. I just love her. She doesn‘t pretend to be perfect. She doesn‘t have a chip on her shoulder and she never gives up on striving for the kind of life she wants. 💗💗💗

I went into this without any real expectations having never seen her show, and I was pleasantly surprised. This book was much more intelligently written than I assumed it would be just based on the title. It was a thoughtful look at one woman‘s journey through health and weight struggles to feminism and self acceptance. Body positivity is important for everyone, and I love that she makes that point crystal clear.

I‘m loving this chapter on her thoughts about feminism. 💜

#Feminism

AmyG Very relevant now....with Rudy Giuliani‘s bashing of Stormy Daniels. 6y

This book is much more intelligent, and more serious than the title suggests.

I‘m starting this one now. I don‘t have very high expectations for this one, but I tend to like memoirs and it was $1.99 so... 🤷🏻‍♀️

LeeRHarry I watch My Big Fat Fabulous Life mainly because of my love for Babs, Whitney‘s Mum 😊💕 6y
GypsyKat @LeeRHarry I‘ve never watched it. I‘ve seen maybe five minutes of the show a few years ago and that was it. But I‘ll often read memoirs of people I‘m not familiar with and end up loving them, so who knows? 🙃 6y

So relatable. Just because you believe in acceptance doesn't mean it's always easy - or that you are ought to be positive one hundred percent of a time

He knew that if I lost weight, I would get my due. I wouldn't have to deal with asshole boyfriends and prying eyes and nasty judgements. I'd have my pick of men who deserved me. I could stop watching my old dance videos and actually perform the routines instead. I could live up to my potential.

Really enjoying this book so far. The author makes a very clear case that it is body image and the society's obsession with thinness, not body shape in itself, that negatively influences people. And now I must watch those Fat Girl Dancing videos, because, to my shame, I haven't seen them before #fatacceptance #fatpositive #bodypositive #feminism

MrBook Welcome to @Litsy ! We hope you enjoy your stay, I think you'll like it here 😎👍🏻. 8y

This is where I am now. Growing up, everyone around me had extremely toxic self-images. I struggle to resist. So I have to give myself pep talks. I'm going to the beach next weekend with some family. They're worried about what to wear. I told them that this fat girl is wearing a bikini! Lol

This book was amazing. Whitney is just as witty and wise in print as she is on tv. This book is a beautiful ode to body positivity.

Fuck. Yes. I've had this book for a little over 48 hours and I've read it twice now. It's an excellent resource for fat women (or any women) who aren't sure how to love their body.
