Snow | Uri Shulevitz

"It's snowing, said boy with dog. "It's only a snowflake," said grandfather with beard. No one thinks one or two snowflakes will amount to anything. Not the man with the hat or the lady with the umbrella. Not even the television or the radio forecasters. But one boy and his dog have faith that the snow will amount to something spectacular, and when flakes start to swirl down on the city, they are also the only ones who know how to truly enjoy it. This playful depiction of a snowy day and the transformation of a city is perfectly captured in simple, poetic text and lively watercolor and pen-and-ink illustrations. Snow is a 1998 New York Times Outstanding Book of the Year and a 1999 Caldecott Honor Book.

“Snowflakes keep coming and coming and coming, circling and swirling, spinning and twirling, dancing, playing, there, and there, floating, floating through the air, falling, falling everywhere.”

I enjoyed this book because it contained counting as more snowflakes fell to the ground. This would be a great book to read to early childhood age‘s because it deals with small numbers and a child seeing snow for the first time.

This book is a great read about not listening to what others have to say. If something brings you happiness, do not let others bring you down.

The book “Snow“ was published in 1998 by Uri Shulevitz. This story takes place in a city that is entirely gray. Then, snowflakes start falling one by one. The boy and his dog are excited to see the snow. However, other characters try to dismiss the snow by saying things like “it will melt“ or “it's only one snowflake.“ By the end of the story, the entire city is covered in beautiful, white snow.

This RF, IR or RA Caldecott Honor book is a simple read about a boy seeing snowflake after snowflake, and eventually the whole town is covered in snow. With its simple and redundant language, this book would be great for beginning readers or ELL students. This book could be used to introduce a science lesson about whether and snow.

Chaseb This website has tons of snow related activities that would work great in a kindergarten classroom! It even has some suggested books about snow.
UDL strategy 7.2 optimize relevance, value, and authenticity would be perfect to connect the book to a science lesson. ESOL strategy 14 simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant works well with the simple language in this book!

DrSpalding This Caldecott award winner belongs in your classroom library! I like the resource you included that explains snow related activities. In social studies, in kindergarten you have to teach about the seasons. This could be a book to help you do just that! In some of the other grade levels, science content relates to what this book has to offer. Good choice. 3y

Snow by Uri Shulevitz excellent Fantasy Picture book, can be used fo reading AIP. Can be use to teach counting, spelling, and vocabulary. The theme of the book: greatness can come from something small. In this story with beautiful illustrations, a child celebrates the fall of snow in the city, and he counts each snowflake. Even though others think that a little snow is meaningless, he believes that it will become something spectacular.

DrSpalding Creative image and nice use of the publisher website. You are consistently identifying universal design and English learner strategies however I don‘t know if they match the activity because no classroom application is stated. 4y

This book is about snowfall and how it can transform and change a city. The illustrations are playful and this is great for kids during the winter when it‘s cold and snowy outside, just like the book is describing.

Traditional literature, Caldecott honor book, 1998. A boy and his dog are excited about the snow slowly falling but everyone else dismisses the snow. Fun tale that shows the excitement of a young boy and his dog. Shows how nothing controls Mother Nature, not people or TVs or radios.

This picture makes me laugh because these are all the people that told the child he was wrong and that there would be no snow. Jokes on them!

Published in 1998 and awarded the Caldecott in 1999, Snow is a story in which the lines and value really add emphasis on the setting. Content wise, I feel as if the occasional rhyme scheme would pull a reader in, but I also feel like the story didn‘t have a complete purpose. I enjoyed the illustrations very much, but struggled to find a deeper meaning. Maybe there isn‘t meant to be one!

Snow is a PF , great for RA during fall .This Caldecott Honor is also 1998 New York Times Outstanding book of the year. It is about a boy who sees snow flakes and get excited that it is snowing but no one believes him. Pictures provide a great detail about the weather. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/SNOW-by-Uri-Shulevitz-41-pgs-Common-... UDL strategies 3.1 & 3.4 along with EL strategies 1 & 4 will work better.

SadiqaH Sorry It is RF, realistic fiction because the snow the houses, the people in the story seem real.3.1 activates prior knowledge regarding snow and weather and 3.4 will transfer knowledge to.generalization. EL 1 , through questioning clarify what they know about snow and 4 will link the topic to their prior knowledge #ucflae3414sp18 (edited) 6y

This is one of my favorite non Christmas books. I so love snow. Well, I love looking at snow, reading about snow, and singing about snow. This book reminds me of being in Germany in 2012... The snow flurries that were there, and turned into more. The illustrations are so festive and playful. It made my heart sing. Sean said it was ok.
