In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens: Prose | Alice Walker
5 posts | 14 read | 19 to read
Walkers collection of early nonfiction serves as the manifesto of a young artistand an illuminating self-portrait What is a womanist? Alice Walker sets out to define the concept in this anthology of early essays and other nonfiction pieces. As she outlines it, a womanist is a person who prefers to side with the oppressed: with women, with people of color, with the poor. As a writer, Walker has always taken such people as her primary subjects, and her search for paths toward self-possession and freedom always holds out hope for the transformative power of compassion and love. Whether shes taking on nuclear proliferation, the promise and problems of the civil rights movement, or her own creative process, Walker always brings to bear a fearless determination to tell the truth. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Alice Walker including rare photos from the authors personal collection.

#QuotsyJune19 Day 15: Not sure if the quote above is from tagged book, but the #juggle aspect of motherhood referenced here seems like it. I own a copy of this book and really hope to get to it.

Its not technically a deal that I can see but this book is available for Qa.99 on kindle atm and I think it‘s a really good deal for such an amazing author.
There is also a book of some of her collected poems for Qb.99 available.

Not much reading done this weekend but I did spend time in my mother's garden. I haven't read this Alice Walker, have you?

Lindy It was back in the 80s, so the only thing I remember is Walker talked about womanist versus feminist goals. 8y
BethFishReads @Lindy I should put it on my ever growing list. Thanks 8y
Bibliogeekery I've read it. It's great! ☺️ 8y
BethFishReads @Bibliogeekery thanks. I'm surprised I haven't read it yet 8y
