So this is a book I haven‘t read yet but reaaalllly want to get my hands on.
This is uk based and feels like it will be really important. A lot of you know that I‘ve worked as a carer for years and tbh this year has been the year that has finally broke me.
I‘ve done this for over 10 years and I want out now, this job is hard and just got harder and all we have had in thanks is clapping from people who voted in the people who have made this worse

MicheleinPhilly ❤️❤️❤️ 4y
eraderneely Carers deserve SO much more than a weekly clap 4y

So I can‘t believe no one has reviewed this yet. If you don‘t know skin and skunk anansie you need to look her and her band up stat!
Britpop ruled the uk music scene in the 90s and tbh most of it I can leave now. But there was always skin being herself in a band that was ahead of its time. She is political and someone I really look up to. If you like awesome women musicians then this is a must read.

SW-T I will have to look this one asap! Thanks for the tag. 4y

The perspective on this photo is weird but I ate it all too quickly to take another one I'm afraid.
From this book we have creole cajun tempeh pieces, a beetroot and candied walnut salad, greens with orange juice and weird fact for you all in the us grits are nigh on impossible to get in the uk so I used polenta (please don't get upset) love this book! A fair amount of work needed for the recipes in comparison to others but worth it.

SW-T Looks tasty! 😊 5y

I‘ve now cooked a few meals from this book and so far they have been easy to make and tasty. The pear cake with chocolate was particularly nice. My only problem with this book is that for me some of the main meals don‘t have enough protein to leave you feeling full afterwards. I obviously love vegetables but on their own with grains I will be starving within half a hour without some beans in the meal. Overall good but expect to have to have to

Weaponxgirl Either another dish or some kind of protein to some of the recipes if you want to be full 5y
Weaponxgirl The meals I‘ve made so far was a pasta dish made with frozen vegan sausages which will be made again, a fennel and orange salad on the side from the salad section, a pear and chocolate cake and a pear porridge for breakfast. 5y

1. Nope, but it is very windy
2. Reading in bed under a nice duvet after having a nice bath with candles and a face mask. When I‘m getting cosy I will probably be reading a book about food of some sort. Cookbook or food memoir.
3. Sending some warmth to @ephemeralwaltz @Bookwomble

On a bit of a roll today. If you like art books and particularly mixed media collages (as in the title) with watercolours then this is a wonderful book for you.
I never really know how to talk about art books as it‘s a personal thing. But I found these images beautiful and otherworldly at point.

LauraBrook I really enjoyed this one too. There were a few images in the middle that really spoke to me and I kept going back to stare at them. 5y
Lindy Thanks for bringing this artist to my attention. I am going to look for Lorna Simpson‘s work. I love collage. Are you interested in a novel about a young collage artist? 5y

I do love clothes and fashion, but I love how they hold memories, personal style and creativity rather than trends and the industry as a whole trying to make people conform. So for me this book was perfection. It‘s a memoir told through fashion, particularly fashion as it pertains to black women.
The last chapter on hoodies on black people and black lives matters was particularly strong. Read if you like a book about style with substance.

SW-T Thanks for the review! I‘ve been eyeing this one for a while, but hadn‘t quite made up my mind about getting it. Decision made now 😊 5y

When watching the news this morning I saw Lisa bloom on and my rage went through the roof as I remember reading about her in this book.
This reads like a thriller and tbh if this had been fictional I would have been going this is too much and ridiculous. Unfortunately it is ridiculous but in a truly horrific kind of way as it‘s all true and Ronan lays it out so there‘s no mistake that he is telling the truth. Highly recommend

ephemeralwaltz I should read this after recently having read She Said! 5y

So the royals are something I‘ve always disagreed with in principle but been infinitely fascinated with. This book has turned my mild annoyance at a privileged institution into full blown rage and disgust at what we as the taxpayer pay for. This book will infuriate you from not paying real tax whilst accumulating massive amount of wealth to some other stories of a more personal note (one about the queen mum made me sick to my stomach)
But

Weaponxgirl This book is very fair. It‘s not just ragging on the royals for all and sundry. It acknowledges that as people they have a right to a private life and is in no way evil like our tabloids who seemed to mostly ignore Andrew raping young women and Charles supporting a pedophile bishop even though the allegations were out there to focus on how “bad” Meghan is. 5y
Weaponxgirl He talks at one point in the interest in a story about how a certain royal may be having an affair but says whilst it‘s of interest to the public doesn‘t make it of public interest. This seemed very fair to me, some things don‘t affect how you do your job but seriously we should know more about how much money the royals cost us and then get to accumulate privately at the same time. Everyone comes in for some criticism 5y
Weaponxgirl Except strangely enough Anne. It seems Anne is dirt free and refuses personal security even though there was an actual violent kidnapping attempt made on her in the 70s. So if you are ready for some infuriating information about the royals that will make you rage then this is your book. 5y

GingerAntics Wow. What did the Queen Mum do? I‘m intrigued. 5y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics in the 40s 2 of her nieces were put in a mental institution when they were 15 and 25 as they had mental disabilities. When this came out in the early 2000s the queen mum said she only found out about it in the 80s. They never even got a Xmas card according to staff there and it‘s highly unlikely she didn‘t know about this as I‘m sure most people would notice when their nieces suddenly disappear 5y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics she was a patron on mencap for a long time when this scandal came out and the royal family never did anything to rectify the situation. It literally made me sick to my stomach reading about that. 5y
GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl She has to have known! I agree with you on that. I get that there was no “special ed” or anything back then. The answer was always to lock people up, but sheesh, send a letter every now and then. Don‘t lie about even knowing. Ugh. 5y
GingerAntics 🤦🏼‍♀️ wow 🤦🏼‍♀️ just wow 5y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics yes I get at the time things are different, not right but they were. It‘s the fact that also she was a patron for people with disabilities when this came out and just sorta went not my fault and nothing I can do. Really?! 5y
GingerAntics Such a cop out. 5y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics I think you‘d find it interesting too. I didn‘t realise just how much power they have. Think it would be interesting from an American perspective 5y
GingerAntics Yeah, we tend to rather like them over here. Maybe because we can lay some claim to Harry and Meghan now. lol Maybe because none of them are orange. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics yea, I know very few royalists in the uk but have noticed lots of Americans love them. Most people in the uk are indifferent to them as an institution and it‘s normally only right wing people who seem to love them and all that queen and country crap. 5y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics most brits I know just look to them for new bank holidays tbh. 5y
GingerAntics That‘s just sad. lol 5y
GingerAntics It‘s clearly an outdated system, and the fact they don‘t even rule makes it almost ridiculous. But then again, our electoral college is just as outdated. I think, as Americans, we‘re looking at these two outdated systems and at least yours sparkles on occasion when they put the diamonds on. 5y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics at taxpayers expense though! It sparkles but us ordinary brits don‘t benefit from it. I‘m getting very close to eating the rich in general 5y
GingerAntics lol fair enough. I‘m ready to do that here. Ours never sparkles and seems to think crazy far right crazies think they‘re more mainstream than they really are. 5y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics they seem to be that way around the world! I need a break from this world I swear 5y
GingerAntics Oh my god, you and me both. 5y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics let‘s arrange a self care day 😘 5y
GingerAntics I wish I had time for one of those. Now that the semester has started, I get 3x the ridiculous homework I‘m required to give my students. 5y
WomanistBibliophile I already have all the rage I can stand towards the monarchy! It‘s beyond time to get rid, but all too many brits adore them and are determined to remain in denial about the reality of the institution and the family 5y
Weaponxgirl @WomanistBibliophile honestly before this book I didn‘t like them much and wanted the institution gone. I just didn‘t know just how bad they were in certain ways. We can‘t even keep a proper tab on them! 5y
WomanistBibliophile the lack of transparency & accountability regarding them is maddening, especially given how the privacy of ordinary people is eroded—including victims of misogynistic abuse & those who claim benefits & are subject to demands to expose all sorts of personal information in exchange for what should be theirs by right. People really lose their heads when it comes to putting fairness & integrity into action. It‘s good a book like this is out there tho! 5y
Weaponxgirl @WomanistBibliophile I agree completely. As a woman your rape may not be investigated now if you refuse to give up your phone to the police when it isn‘t relevant yet the royal family can seal up their wills so we have no idea how much money they‘ve amassed and passed on when they die. And we pay for the privilege. Buckingham palace is theirs until it needs repairs yet more people are pushed to using food banks. 5y

Climate change has been on my mind a lot recently and a huge contributor to this is our consumption habits in society so of course I had to read this. If you don‘t know much about how damaging clothes production is both environmentally and for the people in the industry them this is a great overview. I learnt some things for this but it‘s not really a how to guide would be my only real complaint. it could possibly leave you feeling a bit helpless

Weaponxgirl Especially when she is interviewing people who are inspiring like Stella McCartney 5y
Weaponxgirl Yes I love what‘s she‘s doing but hell no will I ever be able to afford sustainable clothes at those prices. There is another book coming out this year called how to break up with fast fashion that I‘m really excited to read 5y
Weaponxgirl This is on deal on kindle on amazon uk atm for 99p and I would definitely recommend but tbh if you are like me and have watched documentaries on fashion then not too much of this will be new to you. 5y
See All 13 Comments
Weaponxgirl I also always get slightly annoyed with people who talk about hiring clothes. Yes that‘s a designer well made dress you are renting for (e8 instead of buying but then it forgets people like me who do not spend (e8 on a dress a month as we don‘t have the money. I can‘t afford a subscription plan like that. Not everyone who uses fast fashion occasionally is doing so because they are frivolous but because we are poor. She wasn‘t being judgmental 5y
Weaponxgirl But I do think it‘s a genuine problem with sustainability for everyone in the process from maker and consumers. It‘s something I think about a lot as someone who wants to do the least amount of harm I can whilst living on this planet when there are no easy answers involved 5y
Weaponxgirl Also I just finished a night shift and think I‘m rambling so no idea if my thoughts make any sense whatsoever 5y
NeedsMoreBooks @Weaponxgirl recently wrote an article on fast fashion and the environment. This book sounds interesting. I have been trying to buy clothes that are reused/recycled/repurposed. The US has some options and a good market for clothes that can be worn again. 5y
Weaponxgirl @NeedsMoreBooks most of my clothes are secondhand too I‘m just finding the hardest bit to find affordably and ethically is stupidly enough underwear and socks. Those I‘m not gonna get secondhand and I‘d like for them to be made with more sustainable materials too. It‘s a hard balance to get right. I also think about the fact that lots of my secondhand stuff will release micro plastics when washed, it‘s literally a minefield out there! 5y
danimgill I just finished reading The Conscious Closet by Elizabeth Cline which had a lot of practical information along with all the scary statistical information about the fashion industry, maybe that would be another good read for you if you‘re doing a deep dive on the topic! You‘re right, it‘s such a minefield out there, it can be so hard to navigate. 5y
NeedsMoreBooks @Weaponxgirl I agree. Undergarments is one thing I will not buy secondhand. Micro plastics is another problem. It is hard to be conscious but I think every little bit helps. 5y
Weaponxgirl @danimgill I‘ve had my eye on that book and have just ordered it from my library 😊 5y
Weaponxgirl @NeedsMoreBooks yes I agree and I‘m trying not to let perfection get in the way of good and better 5y
Suet624 The majority of clothes that I own are secondhand and I have to say I always feel much more comfortable in them. I‘m not sure why. 5y

Ive been teaching myself tarot for a while now and it‘s part of my self care routine.
This is a really good beginners guide to the tarot and I loved the authors voice. The personal style always helps me rather than just a dry here is what the meaning are.
If you want an accessible guide that won‘t make you feel like you are doing it wrong or taking it seriously enough but that still has morals this isn‘t a bad place to start at all.

I needed this book. I haven‘t been reading much recently and I keep having to take breaks from the news but at the same time I feel guilty when I do as I need to be informed on things.
This book covers how the constant negative coverage of events by the media affects us. This is a call for constructive journalism, this doesn‘t mean not covering the bad stuff or just giving us fluffy good vibe news stories.

Weaponxgirl This is about covering the stories that give us solutions and what things are going well with the same standards of good journalism used when covering more negative stories from responsible media. 5y
Weaponxgirl It also has suggestions on how to consume media consciously so as to get the most from it. I was quite happy to see how much I was already doing but it has given me a push to look at what I‘m consuming and how. If the media is getting on top of you I would happily recommend this one. It‘s made me feel a tiny bit better and able to carry on, I‘m also going to link to some stuff I like 5y
Weaponxgirl https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/aug/14/why-tiny-belize-is-a-world-l... this is the sort of story I am looking for at the moment. It doesn‘t gloss over problems but it isn‘t just doom and gloom and made me have hope in the world 5y
See All 15 Comments
Weaponxgirl I have also started reading resurgence magazine and permaculture magazine again. These keep me informed but don‘t just make me feel helpless along with ethical consumer. What we read can shape us and I don‘t want the cynic in me to be too strong right now, it‘s not a helpful state for me right now. 5y
Bookwomble I totally get what you're saying. I have a headache right now from reading the news! 5y
Weaponxgirl @Bookwomble I laughed at the news for the first time in ages the other day! Brexit is a shitshow and I‘m not a fan of Theresa May but her and ken Clark laughing at boris in parliament was actually quite delightful and a whole mood. 5y
Weaponxgirl @Bookwomble but overall recently the news has not been good on my mental state and I felt this book got the balance right. I had a few quibbles but mostly I liked what she was saying and the focus on reading reliable fact checked journalism was good. 5y
Bookwomble Johnson wants to make his mark on history, which to be fair he had done by being the first Prime Minister to lose his initial three parliamentary votes. It's funny, but like when you laugh at hitting yourself in the face with a hammer 🤣🔨 5y
Weaponxgirl @Bookwomble I know! 😆 tbf I am one of those people who laughs at everything so it‘s hard to know what I‘m feeling sometimes. I‘m in pain, I‘m uncomfortable, nervous....I‘m laughing in all those situations and I‘m sure I look like an asshole sometimes because of my inability to contain my giggles 5y
Bookwomble Giggles keep us going - *that's* a genuine British value 😊 5y

Weaponxgirl @SW-T thanks, I thought it would be good to show what I was talking about. This particular article when I read it left me hopeful but not complacent in how hard things are. I think having this sort of viewpoint helps stop people like me from feeling helpless. 5y

I loved this. It‘s the black British woman‘s experience and full of advice.
Whilst this wasn‘t written for me I would happily recommend it to anyone, I learnt a lot about issues in the uk as lots of books about race and racism are from a American perspective and whilst you know there will be parallels you don‘t know the subtle differences people face in the uk. Continuing in comments

Weaponxgirl The parts about mental health were particularly illuminating to me. Non white people are less likely to be offered counselling services and more likely to be sectioned and then once again more likely to be restrained when in these systems. This is not good enough! 5y
Weaponxgirl The part about schooling and universities was also great. As often poverty affects black communities more they come at it from a working class perspective and tbh I‘ve never heard such great advice that I could have benefited from when younger as a white working class girl. I have so much respect for what these women have done with this book and I learned a lot of new things. 5y
Weaponxgirl One of the authors also writes in the guardian and I always enjoy her column. 5y
eraderneely I didn‘t realize this was UK based. I also find that most books about race are from the US. Stacking! 5y

The uk cover is decidedly less pretty than the American cover imo.
A book of essays from black women writers talking about the books that resonate with them and the importance of diversity.
The best part for me was the lists! I love a good list and this has several that has made me add to my tbr like mad. This is going to be a reference book that I will keep coming back to when I‘m looking for what to read next.

This is one of those books where I loved the atmosphere of what was going on and the premise. I enjoyed reading this but it also did one of my pet peeves.
All the good characters are beautiful and the bad characters are ugly, I forgive this for certain time periods even though it grates on me but this was written in the 60s so I‘m less forgiving of the trope in this case.
It‘s a pick as mostly I enjoyed when I wasn‘t rolling my eyes.

Well this was odd and incredibly fun for me.
Old ladies, werewolves, immoral nuns, the holy grail, cats, murder and a nuclear winter.
The author is a surrealist artist and this is important because if you want something tightly plotted then you will hate this!
But if you want a book full of dream logic, imagery and can just go with the flow then this is delightful. Lots of lines made me smirk and no it didn‘t make full sense but I loved it.

Another book I managed to read recently was this beauty. This is not a book for everyone, Marianne isn‘t always nice but she mostly doesn‘t care what you think about her. I personally love her snark and insane memories. I laughed out loud at several parts and if you want the classic rock and roll badly behaved memoir from the woman‘s point of view I would recommend this.

Weaponxgirl She also ends this book with a recipe for roast chicken because you should in her words learn something useful from every book you read! 😆 5y
batsy I love that bit about including a roast chicken recipe 😁 5y

Thanks everyone who commented on my last post and sorry I didn‘t reply to you all. I was a bit overwhelmed and just wanted to run from the internet for a while. Still gonna be patchy on posting ect for a while but I needed to share this book that I managed to read.
This is so interesting and shows how differently activists have to work in a country like China. Seriously I was impressed with all these women in a big way.

Weaponxgirl The only thing I would change about this book is I wish there were more resources in the back to show how to support these activists in China. Well worth a read to get a more global idea of feminism and what it needs to achieve in places. 5y

I‘ve been wondering how to review this book and I‘m still processing things in my brain today.
Maybe that‘s all I need to say in this review, this book whilst disjointed at points and jumping from topic to topic has so many things in it that make you think!
Any feminist should read a book like this since for too long people in the sex industries voices have been ignored and at best they have been shown to be ...content in comments

Weaponxgirl Either empowered or victims. Their autonomy has been taken away in these conversations. 5y
Weaponxgirl I will always be uncomfortable with people being commodified and I will probably always have complicated feelings in this area but this book made me look at how the argument has been put forward in the past. My feelings come from how messed up our society is about sexuality in general and how we treat people in these industries. This book has made some points click and others I‘m still mulling over to try and get more cohesive thoughts in my head 5y
Weaponxgirl The main point being although I‘ve not had clear thoughts in the past in how to do this is that society‘s thoughts whichever way should not impact on the wellbeing or safety of the people involved. This book will really make you think about these issues from a different perspective if you haven‘t looked at it from this viewpoint before. 5y
See All 11 Comments
Weaponxgirl I‘m not sure I‘ve made any point here clearly enough but I‘m gonna recommend this book a lot. We all probably have a lot to learn when it comes to these issues (edited) 5y
Crazeedi Thanks for you comments and insights 5y
Weaponxgirl @Crazeedi thankyou, just hope they made any kind of sense and were vaguely helpful 5y
Aimeesue Thanks for the review! Definitely sounds interesting. 5y
Crazeedi @Weaponxgirl they definitely were!! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds very interesting, I love books that make you think and give you lots to mull over! 5y
8little_paws I've had this book on my shelves since it came out and still haven't read it 🤦‍♀️ 5y
WomanistBibliophile No woman is a “whore.” Prostitution is neither sex nor work. It‘s a system of patriarchal exploitation that harms all women; under patriarchy women are never far from being subjected to the conditions that coerce them into prostitution and the commodification of sex is alienating people from embodiment, connection, attachment and intimacy 5y

Owlizabeth Okay, you convinced me, I‘m stacking! 5y
Aimeesue Yep. Nuance is good, black/white, yes/no, either/or statements are pretty much worthless for most subjects. (edited) 5y
CarolynM So true. I was shocked and angered when I first heard Andrea Dworkin's arguments because I think they trivialise the reality of sexual assault. 5y
See All 8 Comments
Weaponxgirl @Owlizabeth hope you find it as interesting as I did 5y
Weaponxgirl @Aimeesue agreed completely, it doesn‘t help people when we try to narrow the realities of life down. 5y
Weaponxgirl @CarolynM yes! And it‘s othering women in the sex industry and punishing them for not getting on board with a certain type of feminism and I‘m not here for that 5y
WomanistBibliophile Coercion is not consent. Economic coercion is coercive by definition. It isn‘t othering women in prostitution to recognise the economic reality in which prostitution occurs—far from it, it‘s empathetic and solidarity forming. 5y
WomanistBibliophile Andrea Dworkin spoke from experience. She wasn‘t making a theoretical statement but speaking from her experience. The pro-prostitution lobby doesn‘t want to hear from those women who have been prostituted and traumatised by it and who support the Nordic Model. Andrea Dworkin took the reality of rape very seriously and it‘s mischaracterising to say otherwise @CarolynM 5y

Weaponxgirl @SW-T she does mention this, not in as much detail as this article though. Funny how it‘s always the women‘s fault and they are the ones that should be punished right? 5y
SW-T It‘s interesting how pretty much every culture seems to be terrified of women and anyone different or so much of this stuff wouldn‘t happen. The rules to keep them down and suppressed continue to both amaze and appall me but give me hope that one day women will figure it out and flip that terror to their advantage. You gotta have hope. 5y
See All 6 Comments
Weaponxgirl @SW-T yes! I‘m finding it particularly interesting with her talking about “feminist allies” who claim to have sex workers best interests at heart but are often a part of helping to implement damaging policies. There is a whole chapter on it later in the book that I‘m looking forward to. I have complicated feelings about these issues and it‘s great that it‘s getting me thinking and trying to clarify stuff more in my head. 5y
SW-T I‘ve added this one to my TBR. 5y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T it is a bit disjointed in places which I was gonna say when I do my main review but anything that makes me think this much is worth it for me personally. It‘s also not too long which is always a plus atm. 5y

How scary is this?!
Women should not be being targeted by those who are meant to protect us in society.

SW-T They definitely shouldn‘t be, but sadly they are 😢 5y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T it shows just how badly wrong it can go when well meaning people are calling for more of certain types of legislation. They can just be more victimised by those in power. Anti pimping laws have been used against women in some countries when they are just messaging each other for safety reasons. This is used as evidence of them pimping for each other. This book is making me rage but it‘s good to get another viewpoint 5y

I‘m sorry but expect a fair amount of spamming to happen now.
This is just unacceptable

SW-T It seems like until it happens to them or someone in their immediate family, many people just don‘t care. Disheartening. 5y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T it‘s also the attitude of it isn‘t safe so that‘s what you get. That sort of attitude is one of the reasons it isn‘t safe to begin with. 5y

I liked this but it‘s one of those books I will always have reservations about.
The principal of buying good quality for life is great and our economy should be less throwaway but these sorts of books will always come from a place of extreme privilege.
Some of us literally can‘t afford to buy the quality stuff! With economic inequality abounding it is literally just not within our grasp.

Weaponxgirl As an example she recommends some headphones in her book so I looked them up since I need some new one. Yes Q9 for some that will last 20 years is good value but I simply can‘t afford it! It‘s just not feasible and I would be far too scared to take them out with me. 5y
Weaponxgirl She does talk about usability but this will often be very different for people on lower incomes. I know many lower income people and I include myself in this for a very long time treat the disposable stuff as if it was the higher quality stuff as it‘s all we can do out of necessity. 5y
Weaponxgirl I feel I‘m being unfair as it‘s unreasonable to expect a book like this to cover these areas in depth but at the same time it can lead to the sense of worthlessness and need to fill a void in some people that this kind of book is trying to counter. 5y
See All 14 Comments
Weaponxgirl Overall if you are the target market with a disposable income that is looking to make more sustainable choices then this would be a good book for you but if you are struggling like hell this could make you feel worse. The sections on how to look for quality are quite useful too. 5y
Crazeedi Good points, I always knew I should buy quality, but never had money to do so. I think maybe in earlier times things were just better made, so you bought a good item or you did without. We did without 5y
Weaponxgirl @Crazeedi I agree, some of my most loved and used items are vintage things I‘ve picked up in charity shops that are just so well made. I‘ve always had guilt in the past about those things you can‘t do without but also can‘t get secondhand easily. I always want to buy the most sustainable and ethical option but mostly it was just out of my budget. 5y
SW-T Have you read this one? I rethought some things after I read it. 5y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T it‘s another one that‘s been on my radar for a while! It‘s an area I have been interested in for a long time. 5y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T its something I‘ve felt bad about for a long time too, I‘ve never wanted to be a part of a system that is bad for the environment and abuses other humans. Have you seen this site? https://www.ethicalconsumer.org not sure how useful it is for outside the uk but I was reading this magazine from when I was 16 and a lot of it stuck with me 5y
SW-T Yes, I‘ve seen it! I look at it sometimes along with https://betterworldshopper.org/ 5y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T ohh thanks for that one! 5y
Crazeedi @Weaponxgirl I have done a lot of thrift shopping, and also received hand me down furniture and appliances etc...hard times gives perspective and makes one appreciate the good things. Now I'm just not caught up in stuff anymore, just my books and my peaceful life! 5y

I‘ve been super busy recently and this is the only thing I‘ve managed to read in the last week 😳😭
This is definitely a horror comic so won‘t be for everyone.
Some parts were genuinely quite chilling and creepy to me and already have a few characters I‘m worried about.
So far in I‘m interested (I tend to read graphic novels as a whole for the series rather than judge individually unless one is particularly bad)

I normally love these types of books. I‘m not really into fashion but I love seeing stylish people who convey their personality through their clothing.
The essays are good but and it‘s a big but for me this book is so white. From every section I only counted 4 black women included and 1 black man. With over 54 authors covered overall I really don‘t think this is good enough in a book like this. Seriously James Baldwin wasn‘t in this book!

Weaponxgirl I dunno if that‘s gonna be a unpopular opinion but these things bother me now. 5y

SW-T Vintage Black Glamour will give you your fix of gorgeous fashion photos. Believe they‘re on Tumblr, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook...and there‘s a book 🙂 5y
SW-T Once you start to notice something, you see it everywhere. Same with stereotypes, etc. I can‘t read certain books or watch certain shows now without seeing the white savior model at work. Plus, stereotypes of gay people and the sassy black friend in media also make me cringe. 5y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T thank you so much for that book recommendation! It looks amazing! 5y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T that‘s exactly it. I have the same reaction to the white saviour trope, I can‘t watch it without full blown raging. Plus the others you mentioned. If you are meant to be showing variety then show actual variety, also too many problematic men in this book for my personal tastes. It only got saved from a pan because some of the women profiled were amazing but miffed with Toni Morrison being reduced to her hair. 5y
SW-T Toni Morrison reduced to her hair is beyond ludicrous 🤯 5y
SW-T You‘re welcome for the rec! 5y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T I should probably clarify that obviously they talk about how she is an amazing writer but she was in a section with several other authors who‘s hair is essential to their style with only one picture and zora neale Hurston was in the section about hats. So out of those 4 women only 2 got a whole section with more info and pictures. I‘m such a bloody killjoy! 5y
SW-T @Weaponxgirl 🤣 Not a killjoy at all! Trust me, those are exactly the types of things I tend to notice myself so I truly appreciate you bringing it up! I tend to pick up those weird details that other folks either gloss over or don‘t notice. Now I know I‘m not alone in this! 😂😂😂 5y

This is the sort of story that highlights exactly what can be done with such an overpowered superhero whilst showcasing the kind of character she is.
Good story but it doesn‘t show off her wonderful snark like Kelly sue deconnick run did unfortunately. Still if you are a huge Carole fan like I am it‘s well worth the read and you can‘t hope but help for elements of this to be included in new films.

Ok something to hitch meat to. I loved this one, it was so perfectly creepy and the ending wasn‘t what I expected necessarily.
I found it interesting with the spider character being referred to as a trickster as that isn‘t something I‘ve seen in folklore before and now I want to explore Jamaican folklore more!

GingerAntics The spider character is referred to as a trickster in American Gods and it‘s companion, Anansi Boys. I think it comes from African folk lore. 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics thanks for the info! It‘s always interesting to me how similar and different folklore is around the world. I‘ve obviously got to do some more research in this area 6y
GingerAntics I liked the stories, but I‘ve got a serious fear of spiders so I‘ve avoided going into any of the background info on it. I did get into background info on some of the Scandinavian stuff, though. The three sisters and the two brothers that are really a goddess and a god at different parts of the day. That was cool. I love folklore from around the world. 6y
See All 10 Comments
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics that will make looking into it further harder. Have you seen the peacock spider from one of David Attenborough program? They put it to music and it‘s kinda like watching a fancy pants spider version of Gomez Addams trying to seduce a mate. If anything is gonna make a person like them a little bit more that clip will. But obviously I won‘t force it as phobias are real! 6y
GingerAntics Just thinking of all those creepy little legs is making me squirm. I think me and my phobia will stay over here. Spiders made me cry until I was well into puberty and even the emoji is a creepy to me. I have a serious problem. 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics I get it. Sorry for that it was just one instance where I thought it was cute but I completely get why others find them creepy. 6y
GingerAntics They are the scariest creatures on the planet!!! 6y
suzisteffen SO MANY THOUGHTS About this one and so curious about Anansi and folktales and legends brought to the US and the Caribbean (and Brazil, one assumes) from the Ashanti and other people enslaved in the Americas. I thought I knew some stuff about Anansi, but I really didn't - here's a Wiki page with more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anansi
In this story, Anansi seems to also have some qualities of Papa Legba, the crossroads loa. ⬇️
6y
suzisteffen So I have questions about the girl being Anansi's daughter - I have not heard of his daughter before, or is it also just himself? Or is Anansi non-gendered and humans just make him, or her, so?

I have questions about what the main character will do with his ability to change things. WIll it be honored, will he need to hide it, will the power disappear after some undetermined time? I want him to get a better job!

Disappointed in his coworkers. 😡
6y
Weaponxgirl @suzisteffen I‘ll have to look at the link later as unfortunately I‘m at work tonight. But oh yeah, his coworkers were awful! It would be an interesting gift to have, I imagine it could get very depressing seeing things as they really are. 6y
