The year is 1928. Kate Moore is looking for a way out of the poverty and violence of her childhood. When a chance encounter on a transatlantic ocean liner brings her face-to-face with the handsome heir to a Chicago fortune, she thinks she may have found her escape--as long as she can keep her past concealed. After exchanging wedding vows, Kate quickly discovers that something isn't quite right with her husband--or her new family. As Mrs. Matthew Lemont, she must contend with her husband's disturbing past, his domineering mother, and his overly close sister. Isolated at Lakecrest, the sprawling, secluded Lemont estate, she searches desperately for clues to Matthew's terrors, which she suspects stem from the mysterious disappearance of his aunt years before. As Kate stumbles deeper into a menacing maze of family secrets, she begins to question everyone's sanity--especially her own. But just how far will she go to break free of this family's twisted past?

This would be best described as a gothic mystery laced with family secrets, betrayal, and murder. The focus of the story is on Kate who marries into the wealthy Lemont family. She ends up trying to solve the mystery of Cecily Lemont whose disappearance still haunts Kate's new husband, Matthew. This was nice for a quick and easy read, I think the author could have gotten a bit deeper and darker into the story, but it was still good.

I just started this today and it keeps reminding me of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.

#March into reading day 19: #setinthe1920s. I don't have anything on my bookshelf right now that's set in the 1920's, but I recently heard about In the Shadow of Lakecrest, which sounds interesting. Added to my Litsy stack.

JazzFeathers I'm reading lots of books set in the 1920s at ghetto moment. I adore that periodo:) 7y

Thought I'd make this my new insomnia read but this first line reeks of Rebecca: "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again..." Surely she used this opening on purpose given the famous nature of this line? Btw, I haven't read Rebecca in decades but I read it so many times that first line is seared into my soul. Rebecca was my fave book for many years and still holds a dear place in my heart.

Bette I started reading this and immediately thought Rebecca as well. Curious as to where it leads.🤔 7y

I got this book on a whim through Kindle First. I wasn't really expecting much from it. It started out pretty good, but ended up just being ok. Overall, the creepy atmosphere could have been better developed.

A Roaring 20s Midwest Gothic murder mystery was exactly what I needed. Blackwell populates her own version of Hill House with broken characters, family secrets and a hidden passageway or two. You can definitely have some fun with this one.

I was deciding between these two for Kindle First. Both look good. I picked the historical fiction one, but I'll add the thriller to my TBR list.

Desha Need to go look at the choices! 😍❤️👍🏻 7y
