I enjoyed the book, and the writing was engaging. I did think, rather than reading up on farming in 1900 he would have been better served to take a summer on a farm to learn (who doesn‘t know black snakes eat rodents? And maybe a mule instead of a draft horse?) But all in all it was entertaining. Like another reviewer here I‘d have liked more from the epilogue, but maybe he was planning a sequel.

I found this really interesting. Considering the tv I‘ve seen with similar topics, I wasn‘t surprised at how difficult it was, as well as a huge reliance on (unpredictable) Mother Nature. It was nice to see the community and neighbours come together to help them out. The only thing is that I would have liked more in the epilogue – how much of hat they did/learned during that year did they continue with when they returned to the current day?

I'm working my way through a stack of contenders for a college common reading program. The theme is sustainability. What are your favorite reads about living well and treated our environment well?

Zelma I haven't read it yet but Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barber Kingsolver might work. 7y
LyndseyReads @Zelma I read that and really liked it, but I think the committee eliminated that one. I can't quite remember why. Thanks for the suggestion! 7y
Lcsmcat Did you end up using this book? And if so, how did it work out? I‘ve just started it. 12mo
