Schoolhouse Rock!: The Official Guide | Tom Yohe, George Newall
post image

Can we do #TuesdayTunes on a Thursday night?? This just came up on a Spotify-curated playlist, and I could smell that school bus seat vinyl and that particular teenage muskiness. Man…took me straight back to high school. Hadn‘t heard the song in years!

vivastory And how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind? 🎶
So good!
BarbaraBB Of course we can! I didn‘t know this The Verve song but am listening to it while typing this. I love it when a song brings back such memories! 2d
BarbaraBB Still listening and what a good album! I only knew them from their biggest hit here, Bitter Sweet Symphony, which I didn‘t like much. 2d

Megabooks @BarbaraBB yes! This was an album I bought back then for their single, but I like the rest of the album much more now than BSS; although the orchestral background is still great. I associate that song with the final scene in Cruel Intentions, which was my college roommate‘s favorite movie so I saw it A LOT! Many good memories with her! 😁😁 2d
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I‘m definitely a nostalgia listener, but I‘m picking up some great new songs too lately. 2d
Megabooks @vivastory the lyrics definitely hit harder as an adult than they did as a teen. 2d
BarbaraBB I‘d love to know what you‘re picking up these days and hope you‘ll continue #ThursdayTunes 😜🥰 (edited) 2d
TieDyeDude This song is new to me, but I like it! Similar orchestral arrangement to BSS. Is that throughout the album? 1d
Bookwomble @TieDyeDude Yes, it is. I'd recommend Richard Ashcroft's solo albums to you, especially Alone With Everybody and Human Conditions. Song for the Lovers from the former has a great orchestral introduction 😊 https://open.spotify.com/track/7a90gal9tr3yS8bEXUvu8D?si=-O-28vPQSKOgNjSPsyRh4A&... (edited) 18h
Megabooks @Bookwomble thanks for chiming in! And recommending another artist I‘ll check out! I hope you try the album @TieDyeDude 👍🏻 14h
Bookwomble @Megabooks You're welcome. Richard Ashcroft is the lead singer and main songwriter for The Verve, so if you like them, you'll like him 😊 13h
Megabooks @Bookwomble I am SO BAD at knowing the names of band members! 😂😂 even bands I‘ve enjoyed for years I‘d have trouble naming them. 11h
Bookwomble @Megabooks You only know if you know! 😊 9h

Things have been a little frustrating lately and when i need to let it out it‘s through music and singing at the top of my lungs. This song literally tells us to do that.

#TuesdayTunes @TieDyeDude

lil1inblue This is basically my theme song. 🤩🤩🤩 4d

I managed to not mention them until now but let‘s face it, among all other tunes and artists I mentioned here, I am always listening to the Chili Peppers too. This one is about Eddie Van Halen. It‘s from RHCP‘s latest album and the lyrics, Anthony Kiedis‘s voice and especially John Frusciante‘s guitar solo are 👌🏽💯

My favorite song by them these days: https://open.spotify.com/album/6DUWfrmH8uTH33wMFOBJDu?si=8nFdJyTQRTOTVwD5HuDitw

Suet624 Gotta admit I was surprised RHCP didn‘t pop up every week on your musical pick. 💕💕 2d
BarbaraBB @Suet624 🤣 I was trying to show I am an adult with a broad musical taste 🤣 2d
Suet624 Hahaha. I completely understand. I think that‘s why I haven‘t participated. It would just be Foo Fighters with an occasional Django Django and Allah-Las. 2d

Megabooks Being an adult is overrated! 😂😂 go RHCP!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 2d
BarbaraBB @Suet624 I‘d love that! 2d
BarbaraBB @Megabooks Overrated 🤣🤣😘😘 2d

I read a review for this album last week in Weird Walk #4 zine, and listened to it on Bandcamp. It captures the artist's (Charles Vaughan) impressions of walking through the British countryside near or in sight of electricity pylons.
The listener may either find this a pleasantly relaxing and atmospheric experience (me) or "about as musically interesting as listening to the compressor pump on the fridge" (my wife).
#TuesdayTunes @TieDyeDude

TieDyeDude I like it! Relaxing, but it has a little bit of an edge to keep it from totally fading into the background. 4d
Bookwomble @TieDyeDude That's it! I really like it - I'm glad you do, too 😊 4d

Where did this come from?! My wife and I still watch SNL every week. It is not great, but often good enough to keep watching, except the music acts are often so disappointing. But, damn, Raye was stellar! She is new to me. Her album seems less lounge jazz, more pop, but she has a great voice and I'm interested to she what she does with this exposure.

vivastory I wasn't familiar with her either, but I did like the song you linked to 5d
kelli7990 I only watch SNL for the musical guests. I‘m not familiar with this artist. 5d

I had an excellent themed playlist lined up last week for #tuesdaytunes centered around April Fool's & then work interfered. Determined to not let a big event slip away, I have created one in celebration of the wonderful eclipse. 80% covered this afternoon:
Bonnie Tyler-Total Eclipse of the Heart (I will never admit, even under torture, to the percentage that I appreciate this ironically & which part unironically.)
Soundgarden: Black Hole Sun

vivastory Pink Floyd_Eclipse
Corey Hart: Sunglasses At Night (I very much unironically dig this song)
B. Tyler:
P. Floyd:
C. Hart:
Texreader I love Tyler‘s and most of her songs. And I saw Corey Hart in concert in the 80s. Ah my kind of music. Perfect for today 5d
vivastory @Texreader My local member supported radio had an eclipse themed hour playing during the event. There was some great songs! 5d

Deblovestoread Fantastic songs all! 🎶 5d
Ruthiella I unabashedly love Total Eclipse of the Heart 100%. 🤩 I pretty much love any thing Jim Steinman wrote. 5d
vivastory @Deblovestoread Thanks! 😃 5d
TieDyeDude 🤘 Heck yeah. Nothing wrong with these choices 5d
batsy Yes to Bonnie Tyler! 😆 5d
BarbaraBB Yes to Bonnie and Soundgarden! 4d
vivastory @batsy @barbarabb Bonnie Tyler reminds me of Saturdays at the roller rink growing up lol 😃 I had almost forgotten how bizarre the video for Black Hole Sun is, So good. 4d
vivastory @TieDyeDude I just watched the Tiny Desk performance of Raye. Def worth checking out if you haven't. I really like her blend of rap, pop & jazz 4d
sarahbarnes I had Total Eclipse in my head basically the entire day of the eclipse. 😆 And yes, that Black Hole Sun video - totally creeped me out in high school! 4d
vivastory @sarahbarnes It's such an earworm! I hope that you were able to escape work long enough to enjoy the eclipse 4d
Branwen Okay, this is excellent! 😎👍🏻 3d
Reggie Lololol this is awesome! 3d

#TuesdayTunes @TieDyeDude
I've always been a fan of whole albums, enjoying repeat listens from start to fish, figuring out my favorite tracks, and sometimes reevaluating after a few listens. But I'm so distracted nowadays with all the options a streaming world offers that I only just gave a second listen to this recent release from Palehound, an indie rock band I've been following for awhile. And it's probably my favorite of theirs so far.

Billypar It's hard not to fall in love with El Kempner's vocals - both her sound and the lyrics. This is one is Independence Day: https://open.spotify.com/track/5Z2hjkmfCfIG5gKslBs0bd?si=jNo7JfY_SfqCCpNt6b8lKA&... 2w
AmyG Nice! My daughter saw her open for Sleater-Kinney. 2w
TheBookHippie Love! 2w

BarbaraBB Listening to while albums, those were the days. 2w
vivastory I have a ton of playlists in my spotify library & I try to not fall in the trap of turning them on all day because it can be easy to do. Will def check this out. Full album listening is def an art! 2w
TieDyeDude @Billypar Thanks for sharing. I recently turned off the continue playing option on Spotify. I'll start with an album and realize after a while that I have no idea what's playing because Spotify went rogue. This way, after the album is done, I have to consciously choose what to listen to next (but it's usually some auto playlist 😅) 2w
batsy It's funny that streaming does that, I feel like I struggle to listen to whole albums too because a playlist of songs is easier on the attention span if that makes sense. Like an album requires attention like a book. Definitely feel all of the content now is geared towards a broken attention span 🙃 2w
Billypar @AmyG That must have been a fantastic show! I saw them open for Speedy Ortiz, but I would like to see them as the main act at some point. 2w
Billypar @BarbaraBB I haven't given it up, but it's more like many albums once or twice instead of a handful over and over! 2w
Billypar @vivastory Definitely true. Whether it's playlists or albums, after so long of having it in the background, I stop enjoying it, and I need to unplug for awhile. 2w
Billypar @TieDyeDude Yeah, I've had the same experience - I don't enjoy the autoplay as much. Though one exception was a few weeks ago when we were recommending Latino artists: I found so many great artists via the autoplay, starting from the recommendations people were sharing. So, if you know next to nothing about a genre, it helps I guess. But usually not otherwise. 2w
Billypar @batsy A lot of people assume that because I'm a reader, it means I have this great attention span, and...nope! 😆 I've been broken by the internet just like everyone else, and albums do take more attention. Though I like playing old favorites while I work - I will still fire up my iTunes library for that purpose. 2w
AmyG @batsy When my classic ipod broke, and Apple stopped making them, I had to learn a new way of listening to music. Hence, streaming. I now make playlists of new music by year…and YES, it has affected my attention span. I so get it. But I do listen to albums, though only ones I really love. @vivastory Ha, I have so many playlists now. Playing with Spotify, going down band rabbit holes and playlists are now an “activity”. 1w
SconsinBookyBadger Back in the days when cassettes were a thing I‘d listen to them to the point of wearing down the tape reel. CDs were the best invention ever & replaced so much ruined cassettes. Once Napster came along & paved the way for Spotify my attention span 📉. Your post sparked an idea to put in more effort to enjoy music fully. 1w
Billypar @SconsinBookyBadger I still love CD's - I've been buying them more at record shops lately because it's a good way to find 'new' old music you didn't know you needed. My 2012 Civic's mileage is getting on the high side, so I've got to enjoy them now while I still have my car's player! 1w
TieDyeDude I have listened to this album twice already! Great recommendation 1w
Billypar @TieDyeDude Glad you liked it! 1w

Three selections for #tuesdaytunes
First is Courtney Barnett's “Take It Day By Day“ (Tuesday motivation)
Lately I have been into Tiny Desk concerts & the following 2 have been among my favorites:
Jennifer Koh & Missy Mazzoli
Hania Rani (Rani is a personal favorite)

Awk_Word_Smith Nothing better than a stripped-down Tiny Desk concert! 2w
BarbaraBB I hadn‘t heard of Tiny Disk concerts! 2w
See All 11 Comments
vivastory @BarbaraBB Although they bring well-known artists from time to time they def try to spotlight lesser known artists & I really love the broad range of music they showcase. 2w
TieDyeDude Excellent! I'll be watching those Tiny Desk videos tomorrow! And Barnett is always a solid choice. 2w
TieDyeDude @BarbaraBB There are plenty of "best of" lists for Tiny Desk. A couple of my favorites are Anderson. Paak, Tank and the Bangas, Lianne La Havas, and the cast of Hadestown. They've even had Sesame Street and the Blue Man Group. 2w
batsy All new to me and going to listen! 2w
vivastory @batsy I'll be curious on your thoughts! I *think* that you might like Rani 1w
vivastory @TieDyeDude There's definitely a lot I still need to check out 1w
BarbaraBB @vivastory @TieDyeDude Thank you both. I‘ve fallen into the rabbit hole ❤️ 1w
