Pickpick

Took me a while to get through this. Still a pick -- Vidal is 👍. When I read historical fiction, the less I know about the events, the more intriguing it is. We all pretty much know the basics about Lincoln, so this was not a page-turner for me. Next up in Vidal's Narratives of Empire series is 1876, and I look forward to reading that in the near future.

@Dogearedcopy I read this just minutes after seeing what trope you dislike the most 😂!! (When someone realizes the screaming they hear is actually themselves)

Have been dipping in and out of Vidal's historical fiction on Lincoln. Although it's good, I don't feel too urgent about it, I suppose because Lincoln's story is mostly well-known. Anyway this part (after Willie's death) reminds me I still need to get (and read) Lincoln in the Bardo!

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Oooh, yes you DO!! So good!! 7y

"Since Lincoln has grown his beard, all sorts of odd excrescences had begun to blossom on political faces." Reading this while daughter has her wisdom teeth taken out ?.

JanuarieTimewalker13 You just taught me a new word! Although if it's early on in that book, I may have come across it 25 years ago, which still means it's a new word...lol..at most, that's the 2nd time in my life I've ever read that word-excrescences (edited) 7y
JanuarieTimewalker13 And...ouch! Hope your daughter is doing fine! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @JanuarieTimewalker13 that was on page 83, so maybe you did see it! Thanks for the well wishes, home now and she's sleeping. 7y

I'm back, Litsy! Spent weekend in Boston, mostly helping college son move in apartment. We did have time to walk the Freedom Trail in downtown, and see the old stomping grounds of Paul Revere etc and there was this used/Antiquarian bookstore tucked away alongside the trail. Commonwealth Books. There's even rare books there as much as $25K! Did not buy any but enjoyed browsing. "Lincoln" by Gore Vidal is already in my TBR. Now to catch up here!

LauraBeth ❤️ Boston on Labor Day weekend with al the kids moving back to college - sounds like a great weekend 😀 8y
ValerieAndBooks @LauraBeth I know right! There were millions of people at their local IKEA, too 😬! 8y
