This book was just a good as the first one! I know it's meant for middle school or high school kids to try and introduce them into fantasy, but I love it! What's not to love either? It's a beautiful balance of good vs evil, with a hint of childhood growing pains. And in the end it's about three young adults learning to navigate a very scary, very real world.
With the introduction of a new, female character, I got really excited, just to be immediately a bit disappointed by the cliche of it all. As an experienced fantasy reader there's no big surprises or twists you'll never see coming. Since I know there's still a long way to go in the series, i'm hoping for one hell of a character arc for some of them. Still curious where this will take me, so that's always a good sign.
“Ranger‘s Apprentice - The burning bridge†by John Flanagan, is a fantastic book! I loved reading it so much. The author is very descriptive, so you feel like you are there with all of the characters. There are details put into the book that I wouldn't think to put in there. The characters are so lovable and relatable that you grow really attached to them, and wish you could intervene when things don't go as planned. ---> more in comments
Although the story revolves around Will, the apprentice of the title, I like the way we are shown different POVs so we see the bigger picture. It‘s been written in a way that the change between POVs isn‘t confusing (so far, at least).
Unfortunately, the blurb on the back (of my edition) jumps right to the middle of the book which is a bit annoying.
Really enjoyed The Burning Bridge! Flanagan does a masterful job showcasing the maturity of Will and Horace, as well as incorporating new characters I genuinely cared about! This novel not only has the heart of the first book, but also ramps up the action ten fold. The climax is absolutely jaw dropping, as well. I‘m officially hooked and would recommend this to any reader—young and old alike. These stories are that good!
My cat reads.
Every time someone in a book drinks coffee, I get an almost desperate hankering for it. ☕ï¸
