Sisters in the Wilderness
Sisters in the Wilderness: The Lives Of Susanna Moodie And Catherine Parr Traill | Charlotte Gray
4 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
Catharine Parr Traill and Susanna Moodie are icons of the Canadian imagination. Yet most of what we know of these two English gentlewomen who spent their adult lives struggling in Britain’s harsh and vigorous colony comes from their own self-consciously crafted writings and from other writers’ sometimes fanciful depictions of them. But what were the women behind the authorial voices really like? In Sisters in the Wilderness, award-winning author Charlotte Gray breathes life into two remarkable and fascinating characters and brings us a vivid picture of life in the backwoods of Upper Canada.

Pickpick

This is my second Canadian non-fiction book by Charlotte Gray, and I found it solid. It‘s twenty years old and I‘m guessing her handling of the sisters‘ relationships with their indigenous neighbours would be different today. Anyway, I knew almost nothing about these two sisters prior to reading this, and I love learning about this period. This biography added more of the female perspective to my knowledge.

twohectobooks Now I just need to read some of their work 😉 also I‘m finally caught up with Litsy reviews, yay! 6y

#TBRBingo update for the end of August: I actually managed to read two TBR books this month! I‘m now going to get more strategic with my book choices because I have about six books to read by the end of the year that aren‘t on this list and are super long, so I need to pick carefully if I want to get a bingo.

That is, I‘m guessing I won‘t read a single one of these books next month!

MaGoose I've always wanted to read The Golden Bowl. What did you think about it? 6y
twohectobooks @MaGoose I wasn‘t a fan! In fact I seem to have discovered that I love EARLY Henry James, and the ambiguity in his later works is very frustrating to me. However I have The Ambassadors coming up so I‘m about to test that hypothesis pretty soon. 6y

Figured this might be the last nice evening for reading on the deck for a long while, so I gave myself half an hour before getting down to business on various chores inside the house. Immediately after taking this photo a flock of Canada geese flew overhead, getting ready to migrate south for the winter. Summer, we hardly knew ye! #canada

Melissa_J We‘ve stared to see the geese around here, too. Although I can‘t say I‘m sad to say goodbye to summer since I‘m looking forward to much cooler temperatures. 6y
twohectobooks @Melissa_J I‘m always ready for cooler weather and fall colours by the end of summer, but it‘s bittersweet knowing how cold I‘ll be in a few short months! 6y
Tamra Noooooo Fall is just too short. 6y

Read this one ages ago and was fascinated with their stories and horrified by how little prepared they were to live in the woods.

Jaimelire Read Catherine Parr Traill and it really got me thinking about how tough it would have been. (edited) 7y
