Pickpick

A brilliantly insightful novel about what makes one's life meaningful, and how to pick up the pieces of your life when all your dreams have been shattered.

This is the favorite book of one of my good friends, a former elite athlete, who sent it to me a few months ago, but resonates with athletes & non-athletes alike. It's universal - when your identity has been dominated by one thing, you will reach a point when you need to reinvent who you are.

Sooooo.... my Inter-library loan ended up being less exciting than anticipated, but only because when I was lamenting that my library didn't have her favorite book for me to borrow, my Canadian friend surprised me by sending me a copy. I totally forgot I had put in an ILL/purchase request for it! 😂😂😂 Luckily that means I don't have to try and squeeze it in to this week's reading, and can return it on time. 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Pickpick

This book was not perfect; as a character, Sadie felt like a more fully developed human than Digger, who felt more generic and incomplete. And there were two eye roll moments. Despite its flaws, I still rate this one as a pick. Sadie's story was compelling, and there was some really beautiful writing. This was a debut novel, so I'd be interested to read other books by Abdou to see if she's grown into her potential.

We're at odds - me and my body. It's become my instrument of torture.

Slight pet peeve of mine when writers write about cities I know well. I'm pretty sure there is no University of Toronto hospital. And, U of T campus IS downtown; a bus from there to the CBC building would take no time at all, you could walk it in about 20 minutes. This passage makes it sound like it's SO FAR AWAY.

Still enjoying the book, but things like this tend to pull me out of the story.

Lola HUGE pet peeve for me, too. Can.not.stand.it. 🤮 6y
Izai.Amorim With Google and Googlemaps there is no excuse for this kind of mistake. 6y
TheKidUpstairs @Izai.Amorim exactly! I can understand the author making the error in an early draft, but either she or an editor should have taken a moment to catch it. It's quite a good read, which almost makes the error more frustrating. 6y

Trying out a new selection for #Booked2018 - featuring an Olympic Sport. So far, SO much better! Moral of the story: when you're stuck on a prompt, just ask your librarian for help!

Thanks to my wonderful Canadian friend, Asifa, I received this amazing box in the mail today! We had been talking about the Canada Reads event, and she was shocked at how few Canadian books were readily available at my US library. Not only did she send me her favorite book (The Bone Cage), but she sent me 4 of the 5 books selected for this year's Canada Reads debate, so I can play along! 😍📚🎉

Has anyone else participated in #CanadaReads before?

BookishTrish ❤️❤️❤️Canada Reads. Glad you'll be playing along this year 6y
