One of the most heartbreaking parts of this WWI soldier‘s memoir is that he was involved in the fighting right to the bitter end on Nov 11, 1918. #eleven #novemberbythenumbers #canada150

The first soldier's memoir I've ever read & I wonder if they're all this good. It was shocking, heartbreaking, & enlightening. Recommended for any Canadian at all (if you can find it outside of Canada it'd be good for international readers too). Between the stories we tell ourselves about #worldwarone & the amount of time that's passed, it's easy to forget that soldiers were ordinary young men with complex feelings. This is a reminder. #canada150
I crawled out to the water hole again, and as I dipped it was light enough to see. Just below my mess-tin, in the water, was a huge dead rat. Every other pool near it was discoloured with worse than rats, so I said nothing but boiled the tea an extra time.

This year is Canada's 150th birthday and also we are now halfway through the centennial of the First World War. I've decided to focus on reading non-fiction about Canada and Canadians all year long and I'll be starting with these.
