I really had to stretch for this one. I'm basing it on my memories of my reading over 30 years ago.
I remember thinking this was such a sad story because I never got the impression Frances had a lot of choices. She just sort of happened into things and was controlled by others. Her being committed was supposed to bring her mental clarity, but all it did was make her life even more traumatic.
