Deep Down Dead | Steph Broadribb
9 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
Lori Anderson is as tough as they come, managing to keep her career as a fearless Florida bounty hunter separate from her role as single mother to nine-year-old Dakota, who suffers from leukemia. But when the hospital bills start to rack up, she has no choice but to take her daughter along on a job that will make her a fast buck. And that s when things start to go wrong. The fugitive she s assigned to haul back to court is none other than her former mentor JT the man who taught her everything she knows. Not only is JT fighting a child exploitation racket operating out of one of Florida s biggest theme parks, Winter Wonderland, a place where "bad things never happen," but he s also mixed up with the powerful Miami Mob. With two fearsome foes on their tails, just three days to get JT back to Florida, and her daughter to protect, Lori has her work cut out for her. When they re ambushed at a gas station, the stakes go from high to stratospheric, and things become personal."

Mehso-so

First book in a series but this does work well as a standalone.

Lori is a bounty hunter and I really liked the premise of this but her character didn't work for me, i just couldn't get into her head space or understand her thought process. Something was off about her and because she's the main character and everything is from her perspective i just felt weird and uncomfortable in her shoes.

Didn't love it didn't hate it

I finally caught up with all things blogging and reviews, so now it's time to enjoy the rest of the evening (and weekend!) binge-reading the first three Lori Anderson books! Lori is a fantastic character and I just LOVE the whole #bountyhunter angle... 😍 #TeamLori I might even have a reading buddy tonight, although I'm not sure Delilah has forgiven me yet for letting Felix stay. 😾😂

By the time I got to a 12% my notes started using the word "brutal." It's as if Pierce Brown took a crack at writing Stephanie Plum. Most of the violence (gun play or hand-to-hand) was brtual, but not overwhelmingly so.
In her characterization, and in her plotting, pacing and interweaving the stories of present and past that Broadribb displays more skill than a typical debut novelist.
