Biography of a Runaway Slave
Biography of a Runaway Slave: Fiftieth Anniversary Edition | Miguel Barnet
6 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
Fiftieth Anniversary Edition Translated from the Spanish by W. Nick Hill Introduction by William Luis Originally published in 1966, Miguel Barnets Biography of a Runaway Slave provides the written history of the life of Esteban Montejo, who lived as a slave, as a fugitive in the wilderness, and as a soldier fighting against Spain in the Cuban War of Independence. A new introduction by one of the most preeminent Afro-Hispanic scholars, William Luis, situates Barnets ethnographic strategy and lyrical narrative style as foundational for the tradition of testimonial fiction in Latin American literature. Barnet recorded his interviews with the 103-year-old Montejo at the onset of the Cuban Revolution. This insurgents history allows the reader into the folklore and cultural history of Afro-Cubans before and after the abolition of slavery. The book serves as an important contribution to the archive of black experience in Cuba and as a reminder of the many ways that the present continues to echo the past.

This book is an essential record of one man's true experiences in Cuba from slavery through the Spanish-Cuban-American War. An ethnographer recorded Esteban Montejo's memories of his time as a runaway slave, a laborer, and a soldier all through the lens of his recollections as an old man. This is a straightforward book--no narrative flair or fancy plot arc--but an important record of underrepresented lived experiences. #blackhistorymonth

Back to the never ending quest to try and be a healthy adult. Beds are much cozier than exercise bikes. 🚲 #booksandfitness #BlackHistoryMonth

Ashley_Nicoletto I like your commitment! I'm still laying in bed telling myself to get up and go to the gym. 8y
ReadosaurusText @Ashley_Nicoletto I was extra motivated this morning because I'm headed to lunch with a friend later. And by lunch I mean wine. 🍷 8y
Ashley_Nicoletto @ReadosaurusText 😂😂😂 Wine is the best motivator. 8y

This is #whereIread. I love the light that comes in through the window, and the room has my big bookshelf, so I am surrounded by books (you know, my natural habitat). There are about a million possible pillow combinations for comfy purposes. #riotgrams @bookriot

Reviewsbylola That window! 😍😍 And it looks like you have a front porch out there. I have always wanted a front porch! 8y
ReadosaurusText @Reviewsbylola Thank you! The window is one of the things that sold us on the house! And, there is a modest front porch. We have plants out there when it gets warm enough. ☀️🌿 8y
