Full of love and sorrow, this powerful collection of interrelated stories surrounding the strengths and struggles of women who live in an urban housing development, feature characters that are vulnerable and resilient. The writing is superb.

I had high hopes for this as I loved Black Cake, but I was kind of frustrated with it and coincidences that kept happening.

It‘s not really my kind of book, I prefer heavier literary fiction and science fiction over historical fiction and romantic storylines, but I did enjoy the historical parts more than the modern day parts.

The book is about a jar made by an enslaved potter, a murder, and a wedding that doesn‘t go to plan.

Acevedo‘s win came two years after the medal‘s own review into its historical lack of racial diversity, concluded that the UK‘s overwhelmingly white librarian workforce, who nominate books for the medal, were mostly unaware of titles by writers of colour.

My current read. A non-fiction look into the murder of 14-year old Emmett Till in 1955. Wright Thompson grew up just miles away from the barn, although never once heard the name Emmett Till until he was an adult. Wright explores the history of racism in the Mississippi Delta, the consequences of covering up this story, and why learning about accurate history is essential. A must read.

I like how the story draws a complex picture to attain racial equality, and so many times I felt the pain for the unnamed narrator wanting things to work out for him. When he is unfairly expelled from college, I couldn‘t believe it, this was his dream but it would be nothing to what comes later, then things seem to be looking up when he joins the brotherhood only to realise a very, very harsh truth.

#BlackHistoryMonth This one has been on my radar awhile, fortunately I found a used copy in a store where I had some trade credits (Yay) Antonia Hylton has the right background to write this unique study,a Harvard grad that often writes about race,mass incarceration, and psychiatry.

Interesting and thoughtful story that addresses many issues still relevant today. #BlackHistoryMonth

I think my hopes were a little too high for this one after reading Don‘t Cry for Me, by the same author, but I enjoyed hearing Isaac‘s point of view.

Overall a good book and not necessary to read the first to follow the story.
