The Chisellers | Brendan O'Carroll
8 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
The Mrs. Browne trilogy became an instant bestselling success in author Brendan O'Carroll's native Ireland. Similarly, when Plume introduced The Mammy (the first book in the series, May 1999) in the United States, it was greeted with overwhelming enthusiasm from American readers. Fans of Agnes Browne craving further hilarious and heartwarming adventures will be delighted with The Chisellers. Agnes, the lovable and determined heroine, returns with her seven childrenwhom she affectionately calls "the chisellers"all struggling to make their way in the world with varying degrees of success. To make matters more difficult, as Agnes struggles along the bumpy road of parenting, she learns that the family is about to be forced out of their tenement home in the name of urban renewal. Pierre, Agnes' persistent suitor, is thankfully on hand to console her. Like all good Irish stories, The Chisellers includes a wedding and a funeral, much laughter and some tearsand it is sure to please newcomers as well as loyal fans of this terrific series.

This book is funny, heartwarming, and heartbreaking in turns. The ending especially leaves you feeling so conflicted. There are things to be happy and excited about, there are things that break your heart. It‘s an ending that can best be described as ‘life‘ (the good and the bad). Brendan O‘Carroll is a brilliant, ridiculous comedian, but he also has a way of just wrapping your heart around the entire story.

OH MY GOD THIS ENDING!!!
There was so much excitement (‘it‘s ours‘ and ‘Mark Browne and Son‘) and so much heart break (Frankie).

Oh my god, Dermot certainly has a pair on him. I thought he was cooked after Agnes and Mark spotted him, but somehow he‘s got Agnes losing her mind over hugging strangers. I‘m dying. “It‘s like somethin‘ out of The Sound of bleedin‘ Music.”

@TheBookHippie my ribs hurt trying not to wake up the neighbourhood while reading this.

TheBookHippie I fricken love that book. It‘s good for the soul. 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie it really is...but I had to stop where Frankie took all the money in the house and ran off to London, so I‘m just totally pissed at Frankie. If Mark ever gets his hands on his brother, it‘s going to go very bad for Frankie. 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I kind of want Mark to find him (especially because Frankie took his suit, the wee git). 4y

Not sure how much of this I‘ll actually read tonight. I should probably go to bed, but I just had to officially start it.

Cuilin Oh that‘s a word I haven‘t heard in a long time. I was born in Dublin and I remember my grandfather referring to us grandkids as chiselers! 4y
GingerAntics @Cuilin you might really like this trilogy then. It‘s set in Dublin in the mid-20th century. It‘s an absolute hoot. 4y

The Browne kids are a little older in this one -- and their problems and their joys have grown with them. Just as wonderful a read as the first one.

Sequel to The Mammy. You will laugh and cry. The book had my attention right from the start and held it till the very end
