The Prince Of West End Avenue
The Prince Of West End Avenue | Alan Isler
3 posts | 1 read | 5 to read
In the Emma Lazarus retirement home in uptown Manhattan, the Jewish inmates embark on a chaotic, bitchy production of Hamlet. Comedy and tragedy combine as our hero, Otto Korner, directs his quirky, libidinous fellow residents in the play and looks back over his adventures in Germany, Zurich, (where he met Lenin and inadvertently invented Dada), Auschwitz and America. Winner of the National Jewish Book Award and finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.

Pickpick

A production of hamlet in a Jewish old people's home in 1978 manhattan is the setting for this witty book which bristles with one liners, comic characters + situations. But underlying the humour is a central character otto korner whose story is slowly revealed creating a bitter sweet tale which is heartbreaking. After rdng i listened to the 'backlisted' podcast which id recommend . A bk i will reread as it is funny but packs a punch.
