An Indie Next Title An Indies Introduce Title Long-listed for the 2015 Center for Fiction First Novel Prize Impressive . . . [A] tough, honest novel by a surprisingly wise young writer. Washington Post A complex and powerful storyputBlack Riveron the must-read list. Seattle Times Wes Carver returns to his hometownBlack River, Montanawith two things: his wifes ashes and a letter from the parole board. The convict who once held him hostage during a prison riot is up for release. For years, Wes earned his living as a corrections officer and found his joy playing the fiddle. But the riot shook Wess faith and robbed him of his music; now he must decide if his attacker should walk free. With lovely rhythms, spare language, tenderness, and flashes of rage (Los Angeles Review of Books), S. M. Hulse shows us the heart and darkness of an American town, and one mans struggle to find forgiveness in the wake of evil. Artful . . . Hulse evokes the Montana landscape in lyrical, vivid prose. Boston Globe Hulse believes that grace happens in a look between two people, or a moment of holding back. A powerful elegy. Guardian

Wesley is one of those Montana men whose mouths hardly move when they speak, for whom words are precious things they are loath to give up.

I bought this book used at Boulder Bookstore on our vacation there a few weeks back. This book has been on my “to read” list for a while so I was happy to snag it when I saw it used. Little did I know what I would find two weeks later when I actually opened the book!

RebelReader I hope you love this book like I did! 💕💕 6y

Sharing one of my favs. "A tense western and an assured debut, Black River tells the story of a man marked by a prison riot as he returns to the town--and the convict -- who shaped him."

slhbooks I thought this was really good too! 7y

I love books with unlikeable characters that you come to understand and feel sympathy for as their story unfolds. You just hope they will stop making choices that will only lead to more pain. There are many tense moments as Wes Carver, our main character, tries to deal with painful past events and move forward with his life. The author has been compared to Kent Haruf which is why I read this. I think that's a legit comparison👍

acorter @slhbooks You read it and still think the comparison to Haruf is legit? This has to move up on my list now.. 😃 7y
slhbooks @acorter I hope you like it. I thought she did a good job creating tension in all the male relationships where so much goes unsaid. I just wait for those 'uh oh' and 'oh no' and 'don't do it' moments in novels. This was a debut...I hope she is writing another📚💙 7y
