I was gone all day yesterday and came home to find these lovely (and color-coordinated 😁) birthday gifts from @LeahBergen .

The Pangur Ban book is intriguing (the look on that cat‘s face!) And I‘ve been wanting the LMM Short stories for ages. What I love about both these books is that I can just dip in and out of them as the fancy strikes me. ⬇️

rubyslippersreads You know my addiction to stickers and washi tape. And that card is absolutely frameable. 😻

LeahBergen You‘re so welcome! You‘ll have to let me know what‘s making Pangur Ban look so nonplussed. 😆 The LMM stories seem very interesting; the forwards to each story describe how much she reuses certain plot devices and how some are based on her own life. I hope you had a wonderful day! 😘😘 1mo

I don‘t know if I would have picked this book on my own, because the subject matter was so painful. But I absolutely raced through it, and would definitely try other books by this author.

Tamra Yes! I‘m curious about her other titles. It was certainly a fast paced, agonizing thriller. 1mo
Tamra Was this made into a film? I can see it working. 1mo
rubyslippersreads @Tamra Yes, I think back in the 80s. Unfortunately, I can only find it on Starz, which I don‘t have, or I‘d watch it. 1mo
See All 9 Comments
LeahBergen I was thinking the same thing about the subject matter. 😬 I‘ll be starting right after I finish my IRL bookclub pick (as I know I‘ll want to read it straight through)! 1mo
Cathythoughts Yes , I agree. It‘s a difficult read. But so good. I raced through as well.. must put up my review too. So well written 👍🏻❤️ 1mo
Cathythoughts I want to try other books by her too. But I‘m finding it hard to get them.. 1mo
jlhammar Yes, so painful, but I‘m so impressed by the writing and completely gripped so far. Can‘t wait to get back to it this evening. I was also wishing I could watch the film, but I don‘t have Starz either. 1mo
elkeOriginal I remember the movie! When I read the book summary I immediately remembered it and had to look it up. Judd Hirsch as the detective. 1mo
Caryl I felt the same way! I was hesitant to give it a try, but I decided to trust Persephone Books -- and all of you! I'm very glad I read it. (I bet Judd Hirsch was a great Detective Menetti. And Stockard Channing as Jocelyn!) 1mo

Mercy House: A Novel | Alena Dillon
post image

I have mixed feelings about this book. The story was interesting, and I wanted to find out what happened, but it was also sometimes almost unbearably raw and painful. That‘s the reason I gave it a So-So, rather than a pick, because there were multiple times I almost bailed.

Here‘s a photo of what seems to be the “modified habit” mentioned in the book. I can see why it would have been both a shock and a relief to wear it.

#nunlit

Librarybelle Thanks for the photo! 2mo
marleed I still remember when over a weekend the dress code for the order of nuns teaching at my grade school went from full habit to street clothes. One of the sisters arrived in a Hawaiian moo moo that had been gifted her after a family members vacation. It was shocking. I mean, I hadn‘t even considered they might have actual hair on their heads! 2mo

Now that I‘ve seen Doris, I can‘t help picturing her as Stephanie. And Lorenzo looks pretty crabby about what‘s happening to his pictures.

Aimeesue Great pic! I can really see it now! It‘s only missing his snuff bottle 😁 8mo
batsy Great pic! And hope to come back to your intriguing question once I've read it 😊 8mo
CarolynM Yes! That‘s such a great image for this book! I agree that it had some flat spots, but quite charming over all. I loved that she used some of the jewels to raise money for the Red Cross. I think she will go on in the same way, quietly injecting money into good causes. 8mo

“ … I call it the Star Wars prayer. All that language referring to interstellar space and galaxies; you half expect Darth Vader to pop up.”

I enjoyed this book. I never thought Jane would actually decide to become a nun, but I think she was able to find a good balance in her secular and spiritual lives.

I enjoyed this, and I loved Birdie, but the disregard (and cruelty) towards animals was very jarring. I also found the ending rather abrupt; I wonder how long Mr. Slater‘s change of heart will last? 😏

#ChildrensClassicRead

UwannaPublishme Agreed! Not sure Mr. Slater‘s sudden sunny disposition will last the week. 😆 9mo

The word I would choose to describe this book is “claustrophobic.” Ruth‘s marriage to the horrible Rex, being trapped with Miss de Beer, and the whole lifestyle of the Common. Very interesting, but I‘m glad Angela could escape and, although the writing is excellent, I‘m glad to escape as well.

Does anyone else think this Persephone endpaper gives off a Handmaid‘s Tale vibe?

#PersephoneClub

sisilia I had the same feeling. The writing is good but I didnt want to linger 9mo
Tamra Oh gosh, yes it does! I didn‘t notice it before. Terrific description of the novel, “claustrophobic.” Indeed. 9mo

Tamra @sisilia I wanted Ruth‘s story to continue, if nothing more for her to make her own happiness! That was my hope anyway. 😏 (edited) 9mo
jlhammar Yes, I can definitely see that! Great review. Good to know what I‘ll be getting myself into. Look forward to reading this weekend! 9mo
merelybookish Yes, I get what you're saying. I found the pace moved quickly tho. And I even felt a bit sorry for Rex. 9mo
rubyslippersreads @merelybookish Not me. I wanted Ruth to hit Rex with a clock, like Betty did to Robert. 🤣 9mo
Cathythoughts Great review! I‘m looking forward to starting today. Yes! I see the Handmaid vibes 👍🏻 9mo
willaful I found it quite excruciating. The intense frustration of people always getting in your business and in your way, and the ugliness with which Ruth views life. 9mo
LeahBergen Great review and you‘re so right about the claustrophobic atmosphere! 9mo
LeahBergen Yep, Rex definitely needed to be brained with a clock, too. 😆 9mo

Cranford | Elizabeth Gaskell
post image

Before we leave Cranford, I had to share this picture of my favorite character, Miss Betsy Barker‘s Alderney.

I‘m wondering if the cow had anything to do with Captain Brown‘s tragic demise? After all, as well as suggesting the flannel ensemble, he also recommended Miss Betsy “kill the poor creature at once.” Was that Alderney anywhere near the railroad tracks? 🤔🐄🤣

I enjoyed this once it got going, although I actually found Helen‘s story the dullest, with the Cobb family the most interesting. I wish Laura had gotten some gumption and re-joined the service. Peter Gurney could have used some gumption too.

The term “Civvy Street” was new to me.

#FurrowedMiddleBrowClub

Ruthiella Oh! I see some promising fan fiction/ sequel where Laura and Peter find love and rejoin the service once her father dies and he gets sober. 😂 (edited) 12mo
willaful Ruthiella -- excellent! This story needs more happy endings. 😁 12mo

jlhammar Cool graphic! Civvy Street was new to me as well. And I agree about Laura. I‘ll just have to imagine she finds her gumption and happy ending later. 12mo
Aimeesue @Ruthiella 🤣🤣🤣 12mo

Cathythoughts Great review 👍🏻😁 12mo
LeahBergen Civvy Street was new to me, too! And yes, Laura needed a kick in the pants. 😆 12mo
CarolynM I wasn‘t particularly keen on Helen, but I thought the treatment of infidelity was interesting, especially considering the time and the circumstances. I‘m not sure I‘d wish Peter on anyone, even Laura! @Ruthiella Civvy Street is an expression I remember hearing quite a lot once upon a time, but I certainly haven‘t heard it recently. (edited) 12mo
