Rain Tree
Rain Tree | Mahita Vas
1 post | 2 to read
Singapore, on the cusp of Independence. In the midst of fear and uncertainty, a spirited young woman must choose between an education and her baby. When Ani is forcibly married, her dreams of becoming a teacher are shattered. Employed as a servant at Rain Tree, a colonial home, she indulges in English novels in her spare time. When Ani is widowed soon after, she befriends her Chinese colleagues who shield her from her bigoted mistress. Ani learns that her husband has left her a horrifying debt, one she must keep secret to safeguard her job and dignity. Falling in love with a house guest brings temporary respite. And ramifications Ani bears his child after he returns to English. To keep her baby, Ani must leave the security of Rain Tree. With chronic unemployment, a housing shortage and impending Independence, Ani realises that without an education, life will be unbearable. With an illegitimate baby, life will be impossible. To alter her destiny, sacrifices must be made. But at what price? Rain Tree weaves a story of loyalty and hope with lessons on love unlike what Ani has learnt from English novels.

Book vending machine outside Books Actually. I decided to erm just go inside the store and buy some books I could actually see the cover of and the synopsis. I love the idea of mystery books but what if I already own the book?

HannaPolkadots I'm with you - what if I have it already or it is some book I have no intention of reading? The stakes are too high 😉 7y
jhod My library did it - and described the book in a few words like a dating profile. I thought it was a great idea but obviously at no cost! 7y
SilversReviews I like the library idea with this but not purchasing it. :) 7y

bookish_wookish I did this once and ended up with a book i already had TWO copies of! 🤦🏼‍♀️ 7y
JessReads We run this at my store! We have a return policy that allows you to return or exchange it if you've read it or even if it just doesn't really seem like something you'd like when you open it up. Though very few people actually exchange it, it seems to help it feel less risky 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 Oh I love this! I wish we had these!!! 7y
tournevis My favourite book vending machine is at Monkey's Paw bookstore in Toronto. For 2$ you get a random vintage book. It'll be either fun to read or fun to art with. 7y
truckerswife I wish they had these in Michigan, with no cost 7y
CouronneDhiver My local used book store does this for $2... at such a low cost, there's no reason not to give it a try. 7y
Librariana We did this at the library in February and called them "blind book dates" ? We'd include a couple of general details about the book, including genre, so that people could at least pick within an area they were already comfortable reading in. And worst case scenario, you're not out any money if you've already read the book or didn't like it ? 7y
