I‘m an outlier on this one…I didn‘t love it. It‘s okay historical fiction but I was hoping for something less predictable/formulaic. It‘s a pick because it IS very readable & it‘s an important story to tell—something which the author & the characters themselves also tell us. I did enjoy the chapters set in Vietnam, the friendship between the three nurses was believable & one of the strongest aspects of the book. The men were terrible, the plot ok.
Mom recommended it so of course I have to read it.
4.5⭐
•This was great in the way it shed light on a woman‘s role in Vietnam and in the way it opened my eyes to the horrors of the War in general. However, I wasn‘t always a fan of the story's direction. I mean, how much heartache can one woman take?
•The narration by Julia Whelan was wonderfully done.
Soft pick for me .While I applaud Hannah for showing the woman‘s war through heroic nurses in Vietnam, the romantic entanglements seemed so unlikely & melodramatic.Frankie McGrath came from a privileged background where her families hope was she‘d turn out a lady.Nursing school & the war going on w/ her brother shipped over there made her want to do something to help.Frankie learned quickly how to become an asset in the most dangerous conditions
Kristin Hannah does it again! One of the best writers of all-time! Such beautiful, exquisite writing that kept me engaged throughout the entirety of the book! The development of Frankie into her confidence and sense of self was realistic and heart-wrenching. The portrayal of the war was descriptive and told necessary realities. Hannah is truly giving an ode to women in the Vietnam War and throughout history who have been forgotten. A must-read!
Can‘t believe this amazing book is almost coming to and end. I feel like I‘ve been on such a roller coaster of emotions with the main character Frankie. I‘ve watched her grow from a naive young woman starting out in the army to a strong woman with supportive best friends. 👩⚕️
This has been a wonderful week of celebration! William‘s birthday, our anniversary, and my birthday today! We came to Blue Ridge earlier than we usually come so we got to see God‘s beauty with the leaves 🍁 changing colors! We have had delicious food, gorgeous views, and lots of time in nature! So thankful! 🙏🏻

Best book of the year!!! So raw, real and full emotion that I absolutely devoured it. May we never forget the men AND women that have served our country. If you like historical fiction, this is a must read!
Wow that sucked. I had to read it for work, but had that not been so, I would have abandoned it after the third chapter. I kept up a hate log just to finish the wretched thing.
I am fully prepared for this book to completely rip my heart out!
This is one of my (one of many) book club‘s book for the month so I figure I should get going on it.
I‘m programming around this mess of a novel next month, so I have to read the wretched thing. I haven‘t hated a book this much since the Scarlet Letter. I am so thoroughly annoyed with Frankie and her life. Bah.
Just got this for my birthday that was on Sunday from my family. Can‘t wait to dive right in 🧡
Thanks for the tag @JessieKB ! This was a hard choice, but I went with The Women by Kristin Hannah because it fleshed out so many of my hazy memories of News headlines during the Vietnam War.
Great #SundayFunday question, @BookmarkTavern !
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5/5
Really starting to become a Kristin Hannah fan❤️💛
Exceptional work.
The audiobook is amazing❤️
It took me a while to actually start reading this yet I‘m so glad I finally did. It does an honorable job showing the connections and heartbreak a war brings.

1. I feel purpose in being a loving and supportive friend to those I love.
2. I find joy in the quiet moments. A beautiful turn of a phrase, the sunlight peeking through the trees outside my window. A truly delicious meal.
3. My favorite book of August by far was The Women by Kristin Hannah. It was a very emotional read for me with great writing and a fierce depth. Overall incredibly moving.
Join the fun!
This is an amazing book about combat nurses in the Vietnam War. The author did a great job explaining the experiences of combat nurses while in the war. And then when men & women came home and how poorly they were treated. Frankie was experiencing ptsd but didn't know it. She went to the VA twice and was turned away. So infuriating! I absolutely love this book.
It was so nice this morning that my husband and I walked outside. I finished The Women. I mostly liked it. It had some issues with anachronisms and with being a little pedantic in places, but I liked the story. I was very glad it didn‘t end the way I thought it was heading, which is what moved it from a so-so to a pick for me. #audiowalk
I wanted to go through my phone and slap Frankie‘s parents; especially her father. Something just happened in the book that I knew was going to happen, and I can‘t decide if I‘m disappointed or not. Since there‘s no outdoor pics because I walked inside and also swam, here‘s one of Little George sleeping with Missy. #audiowalk
While I‘m enjoying the story, I‘m having trouble with some turns of phrase that seem out of place. The use of “girlfriend” in a phrase like, “I understand, girlfriend,” is not something I remember from then. I don‘t remember “represent” being used the way she‘s used it either. When a soldier tells Frankie he‘s from Kentucky, she says something about never being there, and he replies, “Glad to represent.” Outside #audiowalk today! Turtles were out.
“The women had a story to tell, even if the world wasn‘t quite yet ready to hear it, and their story began with three simple words. We were there.”
This one is between a so so and a pan. The good- loved the subject matter and the section set in Vietnam was strong. The feminine perspective was good. I just think it was unrealistic the laundry list of horrible war and post war atrocities plagued Frankie. It was lazy to have it all be her. Give some troubles to a friend- it made it tedious and manipulative lessening what was good. I had hopes but it became too soap opera-y for me.
