This is a great book to read to children. I believe it would help them with their inferencing because it is unclear what will happen at each point in the story, so children could get practice with this skill, and learn about accepting others as well

Published in 1982- this book was a very lighthearted historical story. It was very unclear if it would be a book about the tragedies of war, and the bad blood between countries, or if it would be about uniting in friendship. This book was all about coming together no matter where you come from or how different you are from another person. It was very enjoyable

“The principal struggled his way through the crowd and the black man reached out to him. They gripped each other's arms like old friends.“

I would consider using this book in my classroom because it had a good message to be kind to everyone regardless of the situation but I didn't rate it a “pick“ because I felt like it was missing something, like the book wasn't complete.

The Bicycle Man written by Allen Say. Tells the true story by the author himself recalling “Sportsday“ when two American soldiers came to entertain them by doing neat tricks on a bicycle and overall just bonding over the joy of having fun. This story is very accurate considering it is told by the author himself and the story is interesting and has facts.

The foreigners smiled and waved at us. When the black man cleared the fence and came toward us we all drew back and stared. He was the tallest man i had ever seen. And his clothes! Such sharp creases! And his shoes shone like polished metal.

The illustrations in this book are filled with stunning illustrations of Japanese culture as it describes a fun-filled celebration. It reminds the reader that children are the same everywhere.

This book is about the amazing tricks two American soldiers perform on a borrowed bicycle which are a fitting finale for the school sports day festivities in a mountainside village in Japan. This autobiographical story takes place not long after World War II. This is a story of childhood memories, fond memories of school and making friends with soldiers.

This historical fiction book has a fun and intriguing plot that keeps you interested. However, the background and context of the history being shown is still prominent during that time period and accurately displayed as well. Because of this, the background guides where the plot goes and lets the story become interesting through the historical context!

This book gives kids an insight on a time different than their own . It also shows them the variety and exposure some are not used to seeing in that time period. Things normalized now, wasn't back then and letting the kids see these changes are important.
