From beloved Newbery Honor winner and three-time Coretta Scott King Award winner Rita Williams-Garcia comes a powerful and heartfelt novel about loss, family, and love that will appeal to fans of Jason Reynolds and Kwame Alexander. Clayton feels most alive when hes with his grandfather, Cool Papa Byrd, and the band of Bluesmenhe cant wait to join them, just as soon as he has a blues song of his own. But then the unthinkable happens. Cool Papa Byrd dies, and Claytons mother forbids Clayton from playing the blues. And Clayton knows thats no way to live. Armed with his grandfathers brown porkpie hat and his harmonica, he runs away from home in search of the Bluesmen, hoping he can join them on the road. But on the journey that takes him through the New York City subways and to Washington Square Park, Clayton learns some things that surprise him.

As soon as I heard that October‘s #titlesandtunes was #blues I knew my song straight away. Mr Bluesman is Richie (former Bon Jovi guitarist) Sambora‘s tribute to the blues, and even features Eric Clapton. (And I love me some #hairrock!)

I have a book called The Blue on my Kindle, tagged below, but didn‘t really fancy it. The tagged book sounds so cute and is set around Washington Square Park. I listened to an audio sample too - wonderful!

squirrelbrain We went to see Richie at the O2 Blues Festival in 2016; he played this amongst many other of his own and BJ favourites. ❤️❤️❤️ 7mo

I read this one awhile back and although I enjoyed it I don't remember much except that Clayton loved his grandpa, Cool Papa Byrd, the blues and his harmonica.

Cinfhen Looks really sweet ♥️ 4y

I found this novel to be delightful, with plenty of meaty subjects to engage kids in discussions. A great choice for classroom libraries! #raisingreaders #EliReadstheNBAs

You might think this is just a simple “runaway from home” story, but I think older elementary and early middle schoolers will want to dig deeper into this story and its characters. I want to read this from Clayton‘s mother‘s POV. #BeInspiredBooks #tdscampread18 #bookbento

Read this one during our mini break in Branson this week. A wonderful examination of grief and love from a middle grade perspective. This is the fourth book by this author I have read this year - she is just fabulous!

This book is heart wrenching. About a little boy and how he deals with his grandfathers lost. It really made me feel devastated.

I'm still trucking through kids' books as I prepare for Children's Institute in 2 weeks.
I liked this one a lot. A little boy yearns to find that special something that will help him play the blues while dealing with the loss of him idol, his grandfather, Cool Papa.
