Flaubert's Parrot
Flaubert's Parrot | Julian Barnes
Winner of the Man Booker Prize for Fiction 2011 Flaubert's Parrot deals with Flaubert, parrots, bears and railways; with our sense of the past and our sense of abroad; with France and England, life and art, sex and death, George Sand and Louise Colet, aesthetics and redcurrant jam; and with its enigmatic narrator, a retired English doctor, whose life and secrets are slowly revealed. A compelling weave of fiction and imaginatively ordered fact, Flaubert's Parrot is by turns moving and entertaining, witty and scholarly, and a tour de force of seductive originality

Mehso-so

I found some sections of this book interesting and others incredibly boring. As the fictional narrator described Flaubert‘s life and his own, my main thought though was curiosity about which parts about Flaubert were fact or fiction. I went in knowing nothing about Flaubert except that he was an author, so I might consider revisiting after reading one of his books. I wouldn‘t recommend it to someone without interest in his life and writing.

Dilara All I can think about is why is there a budgie on the cover when the title says ”parrot”😋 2mo
Daisey @Dilara Since I don‘t know anything about the differences, I‘m going to guess the person choosing the cover was only paying attention to the description of the parrot‘s color. 2mo
Dilara @Daisey That would explain it 😁 2mo

Quite good literary novel I bought years ago and never got around to finishing until now. The back cover fell off, so I've been using it as a bookmark.

This was listed on the 1000 to read list. I made it to page 28 and had to stop. So boring. Its basically a fictional history of Gustave Flaubert. I hate history...therefore this did not pull me.

Books say: She did this because. Life says: She did this. Books are where things are explained to you; life is where things aren't. I'm not surprised some people prefer books.
