You think this year was bad -- things are heating up in the 1912 Republican primaries! Teddy Roosevelt has called Taft a "puzzlewit," but Taft shot right, calling Roosevelt a "honeyfugler"!

maximoffs 😳 don't they know how this will effect the PEOPLE? 9y
BookishFeminist The creativity! I wonder if these two fine gentlemen ever compared their hand size. 9y
Runnertrish Haha I love that phrase; honeyfugler! 9y

BestOfFates "All head, no hips" might be my favorite part! 9y
Yossarian @BestOfFates The previous chapter talked about how Roosevelt's head said he wasn't running for President, but his hips said he was. So we're setting up a race between Woodrow Wilson's head and Teddy Roosevelt's hips. 9y
BestOfFates @Yossarian This is why I don't pay attention to politics - so hard to keep up with what peoples' hips are trying to tell me! 9y
SusanInTiburon Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. 9y
jessberk13 @BestOfFates at least you know that hips don't lie!!!! 9y

For anyone who isn't planning to vote in the General Election because "there's no real difference between the two candidates," in 1908 Taft and William Jennings Bryan both ran as the "heir to Teddy Roosevelt" with literally identical major planks in their party platforms. Also, this quote!

"I do not represent public opinion: I represent the public. There is a wide difference between the two, between the real interests of the public and the public's opinion of those interests." -- President Teddy Roosevelt

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Someone else who is on my Roosevelt journey. It's some timely history isn't it? 9y
Abailliekaras All too timely... 9y
Yossarian @Riveted Reader Melissa Yes! It's Hillary Roosevelt and Bernie LaFollette 110 years ago! Except we're attacking Big Train instead of Big Banks! 9y

maximoffs How is this? Is it easy to get through or does it feel really bogged down by details? 9y
Yossarian @rachelk Not at all. It's very light and easy to read with very short sections. If you know a lot about the era already, I might say to try something more in depth. But it's definitely geared toward a random Occupy Wall Street guy who didn't realize he wasn't the first progressive. 9y
maximoffs @Yossarian I will have to add it to my list! I love history and know a decent amount but I can't stand historical biographies that read like a dense encyclopaedia article 9y
Procrastireader I wish more people remembered this difference. Fine quote. 9y
ConstantReader1 Brilliant quote. 9y

This is Civil War Union General, Rhode Island Governor and Senator, and first NRA President Ambrose Burnside. Today I learned that sideburns are named after him. I can't imagine why.

jeff His sideburn-to-hair on top of head ratio was high. 😃 9y

1904. President Teddy Roosevelt = Hillary Clinton; Wisconsin Governor "Fighting Bob" LaFollette = Bernie Sanders. Roosevelt wins the battle; Over the next two decades, LaFollette wins the war. Will history repeat 112 years later?

Yossarian Most important fact learned so far: LaFollette pronounced and accented his name to rhyme with "the wallet." 9y
CateKeesling Good to know. 9y
Yossarian @CateKeesling The worst part about getting most of your learning from books is the fear that you'll mispronounce what you've learned. 9y
CateKeesling Isn't it?! I live in fear. 9y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Just starting the Bully Pulpit by Doris Kearns Goodwin and also thought...sounds very familiar and appropriate for the current times. 9y
