Warren Botts is a disillusioned Ph.D., taking a break from his lab to teach middle-school science. Gentle, soft-spoken, and lonely, he innocently befriends Amanda, one of his students. But one morning, Amanda is found dead in his backyard, and Warren, shocked, flees the scene. As the small community slowly turns against him, an anonymous narrator, a person of extreme intelligence and emotional detachment, offers insight into events past and present. As the tension builds, we gain an intimate understanding of the power of secrets, illusions, and memories. Nicole Lundrigan uses her prodigious talent to deliciously creepy effect, producing a finely crafted page-turner and a chilling look into the mind of a psychopath.

An excellent read. I did not guess the ending at all. So very clever, I want to reread now and pick up the clues I missed the first time around. I need to find more of her books.

started really slow for me. I generally love multiple POVs but the fact that multiple characters are supposed to have a hard time relating to ppl makes it hard for the reader to get into I think.
I didn't mind that we were supposed to be obviously in the dark about who was speaking but I do have to say this time I knew where I was being misled to and "figured it out". More a pick than so so.

A pleasant surprise found on Hoopla. Great character development (which seems like a strange statement since one of those main characters is a teenage psychopath). Interesting plot and a twist ending. 4/5⭐️

Life got in the way of me finishing the #24in48 readathon today - I only managed to read for half an hour this morning 😔 I'm really disappointed, but hopefully the next one will be better.

Megabooks Any reading is good reading! 7y

This one took me a bit to get into, but by the end I couldn't put it down trying to figure out whodunnit. It's told from two different perspectives and can be kind of confusing because the two people actually have a lot in common, but I think that's the whole point. The author wants the reader to be confused so it will be harder to figure eveything out. A nice twist at the end finally reveals the murderer, and it was a surprise to me.

Nicole Lundrigen is at her disturbing and suspenseful best in The Substitute. Great ending! Coming out in June.

It's Super Windy out here but it's too damm nice to not sit outside and get going on The Substitute!! #firstdayreadingoutside woohoo!

CocoReads Very windy here too but between the pollen and the swarms of stink bugs--I'm inside. However I do have the windows open and am enjoying getting some fresh air in the house. (Even if it makes me wheezy) 8y
CocoReads Well it's been a pretty good day anyway 8y
