Reckless Years
Reckless Years: A Diary of Love and Madness | Heather Chaplin
2 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
In this page-turning memoir, a woman tries to reinvent her life after divorce and discovers that sometimes finding yourself is not all it’s cracked up to be. “What to do now, I don’t know. You see, I no longer love my husband.” A thirty-something journalist living in Brooklyn, Heather Chaplin has to acknowledge the obvious: her marriage is over and her career is stagnating. When she summons the courage to leave her husband behind, her life turns into an emotional roller coaster. She is soon dating a string of men in New York. On an impulsive trip to Ireland, she meets the irresistible Kieran and experiences a love affair with Dublin as well. But just when she believes herself to be on the brink of what she’d always wanted, a series of setbacks throw her into a volatile downward spiral. Her independence becomes a frightening prison. As Heather struggles to find her way back to the world she once knew, she must confront the past to find her way to the possibilities of her future. Narrated with a uniquely provocative voice, Reckless Years is compulsively readable memoir with the pace of a novel. Heartbreaking, yet ultimately redemptive, hers is the story of losing yourself in the middle of a comeback and finding yourself in the most surprising of places.

Like reading someone's actual diary. I wish my diary made this much sense and was this wild.

This was just really slow and hard to get into. A lot of the stuff she wrote about didn‘t add to her story and I found this so hard to believe in some ways. I just find it hard to believe that these are actual diary excerpts. I also felt like there was no moment where she became endearing in this book.
