5 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
1860, Wimborne, Dorset. Rebecca Tullidge, miserably married to her callous husband, finds some escape through a love affair with another man. After putting her drunk husband to bed one Saturday night, she sneaks from their lodge to meet railway officer, John Bedloe. But much to her horror, she trips over her lovers corpse on the railway tracks. The railway director calls Inspector Colbeck and Sergeant Lemming in from London to solve the hideous crime. As the pair arrive in the countryside, they find there is no shortage of difficult personalities and conflicting alibis, making the mystery much harder to unravel. On discovering Bedloe had plenty of enemies as well as a sordid past, Colbeck and Leeming must unearth which of them is capable of plotting a violent murder. Could it possibly be a woman, distraught that hed taken another lover? Or a jealous husband who detected an affair? With pressure mounting from all sides, and urgent matters closer to home requiring his attention, only the Railway Detective can reveal the truth.

It's nice to know that you are going to enjoy a book even before you start reading it. All of the Railway Detective books that I have previously read were good and there should be no reason why this one would be any different. I wasn't disappointed. A womaniser had been murdered and Inspector Colbeck was called in to solve the case. I had no idea who the guilty person was until it was revealed and with an unexpected motive it was a pleasant read.

'Sherborne was a pleasant town, nestling around a magnificent abbey..........yet Leeming hardly took any notice of it' I've Just started chapter 7 of this book and Leeming's investigations have taken him to Sherborne, which is where I was a couple of weeks ago. The photo is of Sherborne Abbey's Organ.

I have long been a fan of this series, but was a little disappointed by books 11 and 12 in this series, however with this one I felt they returned to form. I was keen to read on and found it difficult to put down, even if I thought I had worked out who did it earlier in the book. A very good read overall and added to by things happening at home for Colbeck and his wife.

Heading back to 1860's England, in one of my favourite historical mysteries series : The Railway Detective. For anyone who has not come across this series Robert Colbeck is The Railway Detective. He works at Scotland Yard but is called to solve murders related or connected to the railways, in what is the early days of the railways. He is a bit of a dandy but is a great character and a renowned detective. This is #13 in the series and the latest.

Miss_Kim I'll have to check this out after the Clifton Chronicles 😁 8y

Andrew65 @Meda Lol, hope you enjoy them now. 😊 8y
Andrew65 @Miss_Kim They are a very different animal in some senses, but light enjoyable quick reads, and I like the main two characters, as well as the love interest that develops as the series progresses. Not heavy on the history but do like the feel of them. 8y
