Oh lord. I kinda hoped to like it, and when I opened with the main character talking so longingly about his love I had high hopes.... and then the story got going... and it kept getting worse. I know that things were different in bygone eras, but that doesn't make this level of misogyny any easier to read. When the guy literally talked about how he had succeeded in breaking her!?!

TCLinrow No not for me at all. And that's ignoring the fact that a 41 year old man took advantage of a 16 year old girls poverty so she would marry him.... 3y
DrexEdit Yeah, some books don't age well, no matter how well-written. 3y

"...Oh, listen, listen! This was when it all began, the rest of what I've been saying's just a lot of muddle...The fact is that now I want to remember everything, each little trivial detail, every single little touch. I want to focus my thoughts and yet - I can't, because of all the little touches, the little touches..."(10).

A miserly pawnbroker drives his young, kind wife to suicide in this sad tale based on a real news story. Told by the husband in a classic unreliable narrator device.
