Edver lives in Miami with his mom, but she sends him to Cuba for the summer to get to know his dad, and meet the sister he didn‘t know he had! Luza is 1 year older and lives a much more different life than Edver. Their differences morph into common goals, in their efforts to keep Cuban forests magical. MG novel in verse

Mehso-so

Another #mordecaireads that I forgot to snap a pic of. We read this one for homeschool book club (and then no one showed up 🤦🏻‍♀️) and...I understand why they picked it but it was not at all up Mor‘s alley. Also written in poem form with switching narrators so it was really hard for him to follow what was happening. Led to good discussions about immigration and conservation, but in his words, “We read that boring book for nothing!?”

For the first time since their immigration, Edver's mother is sending him back to Cuba to see the father he doesn't remember.

This novel in verse is a family story with an ecological mystery twist. With her poetry Engle captures strong emotions- love, fear, and the need to belong.
