I love graphic novel memoirs, and this one was fantastic. Robin‘s single mother moves her from Korea to Alabama at the age of 14, completely upending her life. As Robin struggles to learn English and make friends she starts to appreciate her strong mother, and becomes a youth of two cultures.

For the first time since their immigration, Edver's mother is sending him back to Cuba to see the father he doesn't remember.

This novel in verse is a family story with an ecological mystery twist. With her poetry Engle captures strong emotions- love, fear, and the need to belong.

When Unhei immigrates from Korea and begins school in the U.S. she finds that some kids have trouble pronouncing her name. Wanting to fit in, Unhei decided to choose an American name for herself.

Her family and community remind her that she should be proud of who she is, and her name, giving her the courage to teach her name to her new classmates.

Good story for gradeschoolers, even though the layout and pics are just okay.
