A good dual timeline book about motherhood… each timeline could stand alone and was super solid… I did wonder how they would be tied together and they say it was done was excellent!! I read this for a book club and can‘t wait for our discussion! Highly recommend!!

The Crooked Branch is a story of motherhood. The novel alternates between the story of Ginny in Ireland during the famine and her ancestor Majella, a new mother in Queens. Moreso than any book with two time periods, the storylines are distinct and could stand alone. An engaging, enjoyable read. The ending is abrupt and simplistic and the depth of the writing and characters isn't nearly as good as American Dirt. Still, I recommend reading it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book jumps back and forth between 1847-48 during the Irish famine and present day New York, following Ginny trying to keep her family alive without much food, and Majella trying to wrestle through postpartum anxiety and fear. Their stories both hold sadness and strength, the joys and fears of motherhood, and the connections we need from those closest to us. Recommend.

TODAY‘S PROMPT: IRELAND

Could it be true? Could Majella have inherited the "crazy" gene from her mother's ancestors?

THE CROOKED BRANCH takes the reader through the potato famine in Ireland to present-day New York. The book allows you to spend a day with Majella in New York and then back to a day in Ginny's life during the potato famine in Ireland.

At least I'm not in a print reading slump. 😂

I enjoyed the journey of this book, especially the sections taking place in Ireland during the potato famine. I couldn't have read this book much closer to my own post-partum depression. Being able to read it now made me proud. Before I might have had waves and waves of anxiety. I've come a long way!

I'm spending my Mother's Day reading and doing laundry. I needed something quick and easy to read. This is what jumped off the shelf at me. It's about some of the darker parts of motherhood. I can definitely relate to the post-partum mother. That time was brutal for me, too. I think Allison was 3 before I quite felt like myself again. So, there's a little meat to this "quick and easy" read. I like that.
