Democracy Rising
Democracy Rising: Politics and Participation in Canada | Bill Freeman
3 posts | 1 read
What are the limits of Canadian democracy and how are they being expanded by a revolution in participatory democracy? The Brexit vote in Britain and the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States illustrate that our system of representative democracy is in deep trouble. There are signs of political alienation everywhere. Most believe that government is run by a few big interests. Wealthy corporations receive grants and beneficial regulations. The incomes of middle and lower earners have remained stagnant or decreased. The way to change this imbalance is by strengthening our democracy and encouraging participation in the political process. A powerful grassroots movement of participatory democracy is emerging. Freeman’s message is that democracy is rising in this country, but we must organize to redress the dominance of business interests, and finally fulfil the promise of government by the people.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thank god! First thing the need to do is dig through McConnel‘s desk, dust off the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and pass it.... because after this the suppression laws and loopholes are going to quadruple from state legislatures and once they are passed it takes forever to overthrow them through the courts. 3y

Pickpick

A good introduction to participatory democracy in Canada. Freeman lays the groundwork with some brief discussion of political history, then examines movements and methods Canadians have used to take an active role in politics.

Be forewarned, it's very much an into/survey text intended for the lay reader. Some of the writing's a bit rough, too; a sign the publisher rushed it through given recent events elsewhere in the world? #canada150

I've had an emotional day, so I'm reading about community groups by book light as a pick-me-up. Reading in the dark energizes me and makes me feel a little better about the world.
