A brilliantly dark and compelling novel set in Venice from 'the medieval CJ Sansom' (Jeffery Deaver) 1358. Oswald de Lacy, Lord Somershill, is in Venice, awaiting a pilgrim galley to the Holy Land. While the city is under siege from the Hungarians, Oswald lodges with an English merchant, and soon comes under the dangerous spell of the decadent and dazzling island state that sits on the hinge of Europe, where East meets West. Oswald is trying to flee the chilling shadow of something in his past, but when he finds a dead man on the night of the carnival, he is dragged into a murder investigation that takes him deep into the intrigues of this mysterious, paranoid city. Coming up against the feared Signori di Notte, the secret police, Oswald learns that he is not the only one with something to hide. Everybody is watching somebody else, and nobody in Venice is what he or she seems. The masks are not just for the carnival.

What other city in the world is as associated with masks as Venice? Venice, where the stones are soaked with blood and history, and people are never what they seem. In City of Masks, we are transported to 14th century Venice, specifically 1358 when Venice was besieged by the Hungarians and lawlessness and treachery abounded. Decent historical mystery. Just got this for review. I'm incredibly excited to be back in this post-Plague medieval mystery world. Sykes is a talented writer and always weaves a good tale. I can't wait to dive in! Oswald de Lacy is a great character.

I'm so tired! We drove all the way from Tucson, AZ to Pasadena, CA for a U2 concert yesterday, and all the way back today. 17 hours in the car in 2 days, and I couldn't read at all bc I get carsick. 😭😭 But, it was my husband's bday present, and he was so happy. And now I am in bed early, with a book! 📚🙂🙌🏻

#mymaybookmail - I read the first mystery in this medieval series, and it was creepy & beautiful. Interested to see the action moves from England to Venice in this entry!

drokka Ooooh, I need to check to see when it is released here. I've the first two. 😍 8y
