Drinking Closer to Home
Drinking Closer to Home: A Novel | Jessica Anya Blau
5 posts | 3 read | 11 to read
Riveting and startling. So raw and funny I wanted to read parts aloud to strangers. Dylan Landis, author of Normal People Don't Live Like This Jessica Anya Blaucreates characters that have a lot more depth and more of a past than one often sees in fiction these days. I found it impossible not to care about themand equally impossible to forget them. Blau is a magnificent writer, and this is one special novel. Steve Yarbrough, author of Safe from the Neighbors From Jessica Anya Blau, critically-acclaimed author of The Summer of Naked Swim Parties, comes a new novel of California, growing up, and learning to love your insane family. Perfect for fans of Jess Walter, Kevin Wilson, and Michael Chabon, Drinking Closer to Home is a poignant and funny exploration of one familys over-the-top eccentricitiesa book Ron Tanner calls heartfelt and hilarious.

I probably would've slept in later than 7 if I hadn't had iced tea while reading/cleaning at 4 AM. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ #myownworstenemy image from google

PS I like this book. And the author is fun on twitter.

Cinfhen My daughter was talking about this book last week ~ need to check it out! Your insomnia is no joke😐 7y
Megabooks @Cinfhen seriously. I slept from like 10:30 or 11 (with the lights on and a book on top of me.) Until 3. Then I cleaned for an hour or so and then I went back to bed. Henry is getting tired of my bad sleeping habits. He is my old 🐩 7y
Cathythoughts @Booksandcooks I like the sound of this book. and I hope you sleep, life is tricky enough ! We need our sleep, hope you sleep well soon 🙏 7y

Sydsavvy I've always struggled with insomnia but it's gotten worse this year for various reasons, so I found a great audio hypnosis and it's working wonderfully. Do you do audible? 7y
Megabooks @Cathythoughts Thanks! I love this one, The Summer of Naked Swim Parties and 7y
Megabooks @Cathythoughts Her best writing is about the 70s. Her latest, The Trouble with Lexie, wasn't as good. 7y
Megabooks @Sydsavvy I do! And I actually find my best sleep is when I set a sleep timer and turn on a fav audiobook. I know that's not what you're talking about though. Give me details, please! 7y
Sydsavvy Ok it is by the group: "By Hypnosis Live" but they do a ton so I'll take a picture of the bundle that is working for me and tag you in a new post. 7y
Sydsavvy They suggest doing it 21 days in a row and it will change your life. That sounds like quite the sales pitch but it's really working for me!!! 7y

I was thinking all my reviews were about super intense and oft morose books, so I tried to think of a funny book I recently enjoyed, and here it is! Granted, it's about a family coming to terms with cancer, but I swear it's hilarious!

4🌟 No one really does 1970s & 80s coming-of-age stories like Blau! She captures that time in California so well. Her characters as adults are true to her descriptions of their childhoods. The chapters in the 70s & 80s are stronger that the contemporary ones, but overall a great book!

Megabooks Also, if you love eccentric, dysfunctional families, this is a great book! 8y
