A Place of Safety
A Place of Safety: A Chief Inspector Barnaby Novel | Caroline Graham
3 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
Charlie Leathers was not the most popular man in the charming English village of Ferne Basset, but few people seemed to hate him enough to murder him. Still, that was his fate one night, and it brings Inspector Barnaby to the scene to investigate. What Barnaby doesn't know is that before his death, Charlie witnessed what might have been the suicide--or murder--of a young woman whose troubles with the law have landed her in the home of a local retired minister and his none-too-pleased wife. Now a man is dead, a girl is missing, and a town is in chaos as long-kept secrets begin to unravel, with deadly repercussions.

This edition to the Midsomer Murders series starts off with a bang and does not stop. Barnaby and Troy are as snarky as ever. John Hopkins‘s narration is so engaging to me. I blew through this one and am anxiously awaiting the audio release on Audible next month.

Crazeedi I adore the series, and recently looked to see if I could find the books! Definitely on my tbr!! 2y
Librarybelle @Crazeedi I hope you can find the books! The audio is a delight. The books are darker than the series, and the characters, especially Troy, are more crass and less “Hollywood”. But, I‘m so enjoying the books! 2y
Crazeedi @Librarybelle I'd love to find the audio books, I read Camilleri's series on audio and they were so very good. We will see!! 2y

A quarrel with one of the unfortunates taken in by her husband involves Ann Lawrence in a case of blackmail and suspected and actual murder. Can Tom Barnaby sort it out?

Good, fun mystery. Not as cozy as the TV versions (Troy is much nastier in the books) but it kept me entertained.

“Me and opera, chief.” Troy sighed then shook his head, feigning regret at this mutual lack of enchantment.

“You don‘t know what the word Philistine means, do you, Troy?”

“Certainly I do,” Sergeant Troy responded quickly, on solid ground for once. “My Auntie Doll takes it for her blood pressure.”
