The Italians
The Italians | John Hooper
4 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
Washington Post bestseller Los Angeles Times bestseller A vivid and surprising portrait of the Italian people from an admired foreign correspondent How did a nation that spawned the Renaissance also produce the Mafia? And why does Italian have twelve words for coat hanger but none for hangover? John Hoopers entertaining and perceptive new book is the ideal companion for anyone seeking to understand contemporary Italy and the unique character of the Italians. Fifteen years as a foreign correspondent based in Rome have sharpened Hoopers observations, and he looks at the facts that lie behind the stereotypes, shedding new light on everything from the Italians bewildering politics to their love of life and beauty. Hooper persuasively demonstrates the impact of geography, history, and tradition on many aspects of Italian life, including football and Freemasonry, sex, food, and opera. Brimming with the kind of fascinatingand often hilariousinsights unavailable in guidebooks, The Italians will surprise even the most die-hard Italophile. From the Hardcover edition.

Italy in T-minus 3 days!! Prepping by trying to trailblaze through this guy. If anyone has any tips of off-beat places to visit in Venice, Florence, Rome, or Naples, I'm all ears!

Cinfhen Have a wonderful time 💖 7y
Lindy My favourite place in Rome is the chapel with all the bones. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capuchin_Crypt 7y

Hooked_on_books The best gelato I found in Florence is (surprisingly) right on the main square with the Rathaus. If you're standing in the square looking at the Rathaus, look right to find the gelato place. Yum! 🍦 7y
WordWaller @Cinfhen @vivastory thanks, guys! @Lindy oooh, id love to get over there! Thank you! @Hooked_on_books ooh, I wonder if I've had that one before. Thanks so much for the rec! I'll definitely be on the hunt for the best gelato (: 7y
LeeRHarry Trattoria La Casalinga in Florence - fab food! Have a great time !! 😊 7y

Confession time: I've recently been cheating on Litsy with Duo Lingo. It's just for fun; it doesn't mean anything, I swear. Due to a drunken New Years bet, I now have to try to beat 4 other friends in learning a language by next year. If you want to join my Italian club you can use the code above. I'm still learning how the app works but so far I'm really liking it. Ciao Littens!

Amandajoy I'm using Duolingo to learn French. 7y
Peddler410 I used it a long time ago to refresh my Spanish. I'm hoping for Chinese to make it's way to Duolingo some day. 7y
geodynamical_nonfiction @Peddler410 if it's been years, the app is different now. No more hearts, so no more "losing". You just keep going and don't have to start over a lesson. 7y

geodynamical_nonfiction @Eamann once you run out of lessons, Memrise is an awesome language learning app that is getting some great additions, such as video of native speakers. 7y
ptkpepe98 I wish I had the time...but classes start Monday and it's already a tough semester. We've had computer issues since returning from the break, and weren't able to register many at all. So the first day will also be open registration for the procrastinators...😕 7y
geodynamical_nonfiction @ptkpepe98 one lesson is like 3-5 minutes. Just do it when you're waiting for something, or on the toilet. 😁 It gives your brain a little boost. 😉 Unless your brain is maxed out... 😅 But everyone has time for Duolingo! 🤓 7y
ptkpepe98 @geodynamical -that would work, except that's when I'm reading a chapter of whatever. Truth! 😬 7y
Ericmanciniwriter @geodynamical thanks for the recommendation! I'm supplementing with some podcasts- one of them reads the news really slowly in Italian, I'm loving it 7y
geodynamical_nonfiction @Eamann Sono una donna. 👱 Oh boy, this club is going to be fun. I worked some new muscles in my mouth and throat just now trying to say out loud the Italian sentences. 🙃 I can speak intermediate Spanish, so I'm curious about the crossover. 🏋 7y
MyNamesParadise I started Duolingo earlier this week! 7y
MyNamesParadise @Eamann Spanish! For work. 7y
WordWaller I know this is 3 months old, but I do! I was practicing my Italian consistently for a while before my trip but I've been wanting to get back into it 7y
