The Affirmation (Valancourt 20th Century Classics)
The Affirmation (Valancourt 20th Century Classics) | Christopher Priest
2 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
"Priest writes extraordinarily well . . . his best novel to date . . . an atmosphere of increasingly oppressive menace." - Francis King, "The Spectator" "An original and haunting novel." - "London Times" "A brilliant and sustained novel of imaginative power." - "Vector" Peter Sinclair, a 29-year-old Londoner, is reeling after losing his father, his girlfriend, his job and his flat. Taking refuge in a friend's rural cottage, he tries to make sense of things and figure out where his life began to go wrong by writing an autobiography. "But it is possible that none of this is true ..." Peter Sinclair is a 31-year-old native of the city of Jethra in Faiandland who has just won the grand prize in a lottery: a trip to the Dream Archipelago, a neverending series of idyllic islands, where he will undergo a medical procedure that gives him immortality. Because the process also results in total amnesia, Peter must first set down all the details of his life in a manuscript in order to recover the memories afterwards. "But it is also possible that none of this is true ..." As the two narratives intersect and intertwine, the reader must decide what is real and what is not in this brilliant literary mindgame from Christopher Priest, the award-winning author of "The Prestige" and "The Separation."

Pickpick

One of the greatest things I've ever experienced. It's fascinating, mind-bending, complex & twisted. By the time you finish reading it, you'll be looking at everything differently. It makes you question mortality, meaning of life & the reliability of your own memory.
I highly recommend it to everyone except people who like simple books.
I've never read anything like it.

mooingzelda This sounds really intriguing! 6y
aniket.barik @mooingzelda it really is! I highly recommend it. I wanted to explain it in a little more detail but the word limit here was not enough to this remarkable book justice. I wrote a rather lengthy review on Goodreads though, check that out, if you'd like to read more. You could also read this review by SF Books : https://sfbook.com/the-affirmation.htm 6y

Playing catch-up with a post for yesterday's #LaIslaBonita for #JuneTunz

Christopher Priest has written several books set in the Dream Archipelago, an infinite group of slightly surreal islands. These two are TBR but I have read the tagged book, The Affirmation, which is his first set in this strange world.

Oryx This sounds interesting. I really liked Inverted World and the Prestige, but hadn't come across this series yet. 7y
