Schmidt's memoir tells the story of growing up in the 1980s, surrounded by drug addicts, dysfunction, and a father diagnosed with AIDS. He doesn't shy away from the gritty details of his upbringing, nor does he hesitate to confess the anger he felt toward his father for most of his life. Schmidt is a fantastic writer and his story never drags for a moment.
A seriously under hyped book. This a memoir about overcoming - about finding contentment even when life gets in the way. This has one of the best book endings ever. Whenever I'm struggling with something, I repeat the ending like a silent prayer. My uncle battled AIDS and I try to read as much fiction I can with this theme just to feel closer to him. This brought his spirit right into my ❤️.
