"A kid at my school said my dad's English sounds like a thick, dirty river. But to me his English sounds like gentle rain."
"A kid at my school said my dad's English sounds like a thick, dirty river. But to me his English sounds like gentle rain."
This would be an excellent book for children to read with their parents! It shows a sweet father son relationship.
A Different Pond by Bao Phi, 2018. Caldecott Award Winning Book. This is a sweet book about a father and son waking up early to go fish for their dinner before the father has to go to work. It shows a glimpse of what life was like for people who were in the Vietnam War, and how many had to work multiple jobs to make ends meet. The illustrations perfectly portray the lighting before the sun rises.

I loved reading this book! I think it would be great in teachings about immigration.

A moment in the book that I related to is when the dad was explaining to his son about the Vietnam war and his experiences. I relate to this because it reminds me of a time when I used to go and do things with my granddad and he would explain to me experiences from his childhood.
“‘Why do we still have to fish for food?‘ I ask.
‘Everything in America costs a lot of money,‘ [Dad] explains.”
This book is a great book that helps the audience understand cultural differences and also economic differences. This book includes father-son bonding time that explains when he was in the Vietnam war. I think this book is also a good book to help children understand that they need to be lucky and grateful for what they have.
This book was published in 2017 and was an Asian/Pacific American book award winner. This book is about a young boy who lives in America with his family who works very hard. The boy and his father go fishing, and the story follows the relationship between father and son. I would definitely use this book in my class!
This fiction story is about a boy and his father. As a young boy Bao Phi and his father decide one morning to go fishing before his father has to leave for work. Bao and his father are fishing not for pleasure but to catch a meal. This is a cute picture book that won the Asian/Pacific American Award. I would recommend reading this story to the upper elementary grades. Published in 2017.
This is a powerful story. It shines a light on hardworking refugee parents who are making an effort to create a life for their American born children. The dark tones create a feeling that not everything in life is bright and happy.
This picture book is about a boy who goes on a fishing trip with his dad. On the trip he learns about his dad‘s past fishing in a different pond, and his present fishing to feed his family. The illustrations provided by Thi Bui add to the telling of the story. Different settings use different colors and tones, but each illustration uses the same strokes that aren‘t always clean around the edges.
The way they use dark greens and blue to capture the night sky is beautiful.
The relationship between the son and father is very simple yet complex because they care so much for one another and fishing is how they show it.
I loved this book! The illustrations pulled me right in and I was hooked. The story itself was super sweet, but the drawings pull everything together and make it such a sweet tale.
A different pond, is a book about a son and his father going fishing every morning. They go fishing every morning so they have food for the evening. This story is a sweet tale about how even if you are struggling, you are never truly suffering with your family around.
“And I will smile and nod,
and later, when we sleep,
we will dream of fish
in faraway ponds.”
This book is a great father-child book. It‘s also a great book for children who have a parent on a schedule like the one the father in this book has. It is a meaningful story of a little boy and his father and the time they spend together.
Loved this gentle picture book about a father and son‘s quiet morning fishing... and so much more. ❤️ #foodandlit #Vietnam
A Different Pond is a Zolotow award-winning MF picture book by the poet Bao Phi and illustrated by Thi Bui. On the surface, a child may see it simply as the story of a boy fishing with his dad. However, it is actually a tale of immigration, starting over, and survival as a family. I would recommend planning a lesson around the resource provided below!

I didn‘t realize this was a children‘s book when I got it from Libby. I thought it was going to be longer, but it wasn‘t a big deal. This focuses on a day in an immigrant Vietnamese family. The illustrations are done by the same women that wrote and illustrated The Best We Could Do.
Using this for Pan Asian Author - honestly I don‘t know if this fits the prompt it‘s tough to find anything online for this prompt. #Booked2020

A Different Pond by Bao Phi and illustrated by Thi Bui is a beautiful Caldecott RF story. Phi speaks volumes with this incredible story that students with struggling families will connect with, having them do an AS will be perfect. This story manages to balance sadness and content all while teaching kids the value of family. Although some underlying messages may be overseen by elementary aged students, it is still a book all educators must have.
“A kid at my school said my dad's English sounds like a thick dirty river. But to me his English sounds like gentle rain“ UGH are you kidding me ?? thats absolutely gorgeous.
I think this is just an absolute must read in any classroom. I love the cross cultural perspectives it brings and how beautifully it is written.
A different pond by Bao Phi was a 2018 Caldecott honor book. This gorgeously illustrated and beautifully written book talks about the bond of father and son. They go out fishing everyday to catch their dinner and while they wait the dad tells his son about a pond back in Vietnam. Bao Phi's poetry is so moving. I love the way he evokes emotions through the littlest amount of words.
