Prayer for the Dead
Prayer for the Dead: An Inspector McLean Novel | James Oswald
7 posts | 6 read | 3 to read
Detective Inspector Tony McLean is on the case when the search for a missing journalist uncovers the scene of a carefully staged murder. In a sealed chamber, deep in the heart of Gilmerton Cove, a mysterious network of caves and passages sprawling beneath Edinburgh, the body is discovered in a seemingly macabre ritual of purification. But McLean knew the dead man and can't shake off the suspicion that there is far more to this case than meets the eye. For one thing, the baffling lack of forensics at the crime scene seems impossible. But that's just the first in a series of revelations about this case that seems beyond belief. Teamed with the most unlikely and unwelcome of allies, McLean must track down a killer--driven by the darkest compulsions and who will answer only to a higher power--until it's his own blood on the altar. Shocking and suspenseful, Prayer for the Dead, the fifth installment in James Oswald's internationally bestselling series, plunges readers into the bone-chilling darkness of an underground world filled with ancient secrets.

5th book in the Inspector McLean series. I enjoy this series because each book has a paranormal element that makes it unique from the other police procedurals I have read. Oswald also created such memorable characters that I was able to jump right back into the series despite it being 2 years since I read the last one. This was my least favorite to date because although the story started and ended with a bang, the mid section was slow.

Bluebird Nevertheless, i won‘t wait another 2 years to read the next one. I look forward to finding out what is next for McLean and company 2y

I just started the next book in the Inspector McLean series.

“He kneels before me like a penitent, face to the stone wall. The bag over his head means he can‘t see the indentations in the rock face…”

I get hooked by the first sentences. The first chapters are always intriguing and a great start to a compelling mystery. This one is no exception. I‘ve no idea where it will take me. I love trying to solve Oswald‘s murder mysteries!

Book 16 2021- this is the straw in this series that broke this camels back. It just felt to me as though the author has lost his way a little and this book had lots of threads that didn‘t lead to anything very satisfactory. I won‘t be reading any more of this series for a while. Probably a good thing as I have quite a lot of #booked2021 to catch up on!!!

My reading at the weekend included the fifth in the DI McLean series set in Edinburgh. A property development, a body found in a set of man made caves in the heart of the city, and the ever present sense of supernatural forces at work. An enjoyable character and series which doesn't stray into the ridiculous (always a worry for me in crime novels with spooky element).

Hard to review this book as I do enjoy the series but generally found this one quite muddled and mixed up with a lot of different plot points & feeling as if there was no theme to the central investigation. In general I enjoyed reading it, and the end partially brought it together but I expect more from this series. I think Tony needs Emma back in his life and he needs more of a foil to bounce ideas off during the investigation. Fingers crossed🤞

Tamra 🤞🏾 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I agree the series does need Emma back as a romantic spark! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB In this one it just felt as if there was no one he formed any sort of relationship with. Even MacBride and Grumpy Bob seemed to have less of a role. 6y

EadieB @Andrew65 It seemed he was working more with Ritchie but she‘s not as colorful as Grumpy Bob and MacBride didn‘t seem as friendly to MacLean as in the others books. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Totally agree, Ritchie almost seems a non person. Almost forgot he had worked with her! I was more interested in the woman from forensics? 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Yes after Ritchie‘s almost death and recovery she does seem very different and she was too interested in Daniel and MacLean seemed annoyed at that. Probably because of Daniel‘s religious beliefs. The woman in forensics had more of a bubbly personality and was very interesting. Hopefully, the next book will get back on track. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB First three just got better and better, but last two have let me down to some extent or other. Others seem to have enjoyed them more. I was hoping a relationship was going to develop with the forensics woman - can‘t remember her name. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I can‘t remember her name either. Was it something like Cairn? What is that site that you use to look up characters in books? 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB http://www.bookcompanion.com/author_list.html But just checked and this book isn‘t on there. (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Oh well I guess we can find out in the next book. I mailed my book away yesterday for a swap. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Just checked with the book, and well done. It was Dr Jemima Cairns. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Glad you found it as it was bothering me. Yes, I was very close! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Beauty Of ebooks where you can do a search! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Right! I was peeking at Oswald‘s page on Goodreads and saw a spoiler about Emma. Their relationship will start up for sure but I‘m not going to say what happens because I don‘t want to spoil it for you. I was just trying to find if there were characters on his page and saw something that I didn‘t know. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB That‘s the problem with some sites! Spoilers! 😬 6y
EadieB @andrew65 Right! But once you see it you can‘t erase it! Are you finished 2nd section yet? I have about 30 more pages. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Halfway through. That‘s the problem you can‘t Unsee it! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 10 more pages now! 6y
andrew61 That thread sounds intriguing - my next in series is book of dead, so ill have to crack on. 6y

In a cave beneath the streets of Edinburgh a man is first ritually purified - and then murdered....
DI Tony McLean is handed one of the darkest puzzles of his career. With lack of forensic evidence it proves to be a challenge. Bodies begin to stack up and McLean knows he will strike again unless they can stop him. Oswald has once again given us an easy read with interesting characters. I‘m looking forward to the next installment. Recommended!
