'The devil gave the woman a nudge: "Look at that belt full of money peeping out from under the butcher's shirt!"' Written for a local German journal and published in 1811, these fabulous, funny, jewel-like miniature tales describe con men, tricksters, disasters, murders, rascals and lovers, and include Franz Kafka's favourite story. Introducing Little Black Classics: 80 books for Penguin's 80th birthday. Little Black Classics celebrate the huge range and diversity of Penguin Classics, with books from around the world and across many centuries. They take us from a balloon ride over Victorian London to a garden of blossom in Japan, from Tierra del Fuego to 16th century California and the Russian steppe. Here are stories lyrical and savage; poems epic and intimate; essays satirical and inspirational; and ideas that have shaped the lives of millions. Johann Peter Hebel (1760-1826). Hebel's The Treasure Chest is available in Penguin Classics.

A simple but entertaining collection of short stories. I enjoyed this book; it was a quick read and a good palate cleanser before I move onto something new (and longer!).

I was expecting dark fairy tales and really only the title story delivered on that front so I was a bit disappointed. These were more like moralistic fables. Pictured is not the butcher's dog, but my dog Gabriel. #dogsoflitsy

Lmstraubie So cute 😍🐶 7y
Brie Ha, he refused to look at the camera! Cute but so stubborn. @Lmstraubie 7y
DGRachel My Akita/Collie mix was like that. Hated having her picture taken and would refuse to look at the camera. So much attitude. 😂 7y

Brie @DGRachel Haha, good to know I'm not the only one with camera shy dogs 7y
emtobiasz Aw, Gabriel is a dear. My dog only responds to her name the first time I say it 😂 7y
Brie @emtobiasz That's funny 😂Gabe doesn't even really know his own name! 7y
emtobiasz @Brie aww, Olive knows hers really well-- probably because we bribed her as a puppy to learn it. Her favorite thing is when strangers say it-- people are always asking me her name, and repeating after me. She wags so much then 🐶❤️ 7y
Brie Aw, Olive sounds so cute @emtobiasz 7y
