A fascinating and well researched theory about the lost colony at Roanoke in Virginia.

The mystery of the lost colony is baked into our pop culture, & I‘ve read various theories about what may have happened. This one is well researched, well laid out, & also much less mysterious. Very slow, & the 1st half is all the context of England creating colonies in the USA, but overall a fascinating read.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

BookmarkTavern #AmericanGirlReads Definitely want to rewatch the Sleepy Hollow tv episode about the colony now though. 😅 2d
CozyBookworm I‘ve always been fascinated by the story of Roanoke. I‘ll definitely check this one out! 2d
AnnCrystal Roanoke 📚💝. 2d
Born.A.Reader I have this one, read it last year, and enjoyed it as well. I love learning about Roanoke. 1d

For January, our first #AmericanGirlReads is Felicity Merriman, a spunky young girl living during the American Revolution.

Here are a few ideas for books to read for her!

I‘m going for a book about colonial times and reading the tagged book, a nonfiction book about the lost Roanoke colony.

BookmarkTavern Let me know if you‘d like to be added to the tag list! https://app.thestorygraph.com/reading_challenges/decd114d-c3bf-4960-a1c3-b761b26... (edited) 2w
lauraisntwilder Can you add me to the tag list? I immediately thought of one for Felicity. 😊 2w

ferskner This sounds so fun! Please add me. 2w
BookmarkTavern @lauraisntwilder Of course! What will you be reading? @ferskner A pleasure to have you! 2w
PathfinderNicole I‘m leaning towards the tagged but haven‘t fully decided! 2w
Roary47 I was also thinking of using my #USPresidents read, but will try to sneak in Meet Felicity to my 8 year olds nighttime reading since we are here. 😅🥰 2w
BookmarkTavern @PathfinderNicole Oh that looks really fun! Can‘t wait to read your thoughts. @Roary47 What a wonderful thing to do! I was 8 when I first started reading them! 2w

#NoOneKnows what really happened to the Roanoke colonists of 1598. When a group charged with getting supplies in England returned over 2 years later to what is today the US East Coast, the entire village was abandoned. Why did the colonists leave? Where did they go? Horn has a theory that answers these questions partly. Not really narrative nonfiction, but for those who like real life mysteries, take a look. #rocktober

Kaye Oh, another good sounding one! You‘re hitting the jackpot this morning with interesting books. Great to see more nonfiction posts 😀. @librarybelle (edited) 8y
Librarybelle @Kaye Thanks! I gave it four stars when I read it back in the early 2010s. Definitely an interesting topic! 8y
Kaye Certainly is. I like reading about unexplained things that have never been figured out. I guess you keep hoping that someday there will be answers to some of them, but like this one, an awful lot of time has gone by, so it‘s probably anyone‘s guess at this point. 8y

Cinfhen Very cool! 8y
Librarybelle @Kaye I see specials from time to time on TV that the mystery has been solved, but you're right, it's everyone's guess at this point! 8y
Librarybelle @Cinfhen I thought so too! If I remember correctly, it's a thinner book too (not as long as other nonfiction books)! 8y
Cinfhen How was your conference? Did they highlight new books? 8y
Librarybelle @Cinfhen The conference was good! I did not attend any reader's advisory sessions, though I understand from someone who did attend that Litsy was mentioned! This conference, for me, let me focus on customer service and other things for my staff. I'm going to the Public Library Association conference in Philly in March, where I plan to attend a lot more book related sessions and find some good books in the exhibits area. Thanks for asking! 8y
Cinfhen That‘s funny that Litsy was mentioned 😂 8y
Cinfhen That should be fun 8y
Librarybelle @Cinfhen I'm looking forward to the conference in March. It is bigger, so will have a lot more to offer! 8y
