Casting the Runes (Fantasy and Horror Classics)
Casting the Runes (Fantasy and Horror Classics) | M. R. James,
5 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
M. R. James was a prolific and hugely successful author, now credited with having redefined the ghost story for the 20th century by abandoning many of the formal Gothic clichs of his predecessors and using more realistic contemporary settings. 'Casting the Runes' is one of his most famous tales, and was adapted into a film in 1958. Many of the earliest occult stories, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

"His own house was odious"--best line in this M.R. James story that was deliciously building up its creep factor when it was suddenly over, resolved with a pat ending. Though I'm easily scared, I was ready to be thoroughly freaked out & sadly, that didn't happen. But it's a well-written short story & gives a sense of James's ability to build & sustain a tense, menacing atmosphere. The MC was definitely #underpressure? #SeptemBowie #ripxii

RaimeyGallant That is a great line. 7y

This was a great little creeper. I listened to it this morning when I was doing the house work.
