An Ocean in Iowa | Peter Hedges
2 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
A funny, bittersweet exploration of how a child can change in one short year of love, loss, and growing up... Seven-year-old Scotty Ocean decides that seven is going to be his year. But soon after his birthday, his artist-turned-alcoholic mother abandons the familyleaving Scotty and his two older sisters alone with their father. As his perfect year is torn apart (falls apart?), Scotty begins to act out during school and takes a series of increasingly wild actions to try to win his mother backand, when that doesnt work, to replace her. Funny and deeply affecting, An Ocean in Iowa traces Scottys desperate attempt to hold on to his childhood while the foundation of his family disintegrates. As Scottys year as a seven-year-old flies byand the dreaded eight approachesHedges explores how Scotty sheds his childhood in a one-eighty of the year he hoped would be so perfect. Beautifully written, and with Hedgess careful attention to period detail, this compelling coming-of-age novel sets the private turmoil of a disintegrating family against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and the turbulent 1960s.

Mehso-so

This was kind of a tough read. Well written and mostly engaging, Hedges captured very well what it was like to be a 7 year old dealing with hard things. The initial change in routine following parents splitting up is one so many of us can relate to and made me really feel for the MC and his siblings. That being said, there wasn‘t much else to this story and I was left wondering what the point was 🤷🏻‍♀️

My second #roll100 read complete!

Pickpick

I chose this as my next read after getting several recommendations once I finished What‘s Eating Gilbert Grape. It‘s not super long and I read most of it in one sitting last night. It‘s a story about 7-year-old Scotty Ocean, growing up in Iowa in 1969-1970. He‘s an odd sort of person and deals with his alcoholic mother abandoning the family in odd ways. Honestly, I wish it were longer. It‘s a perfect snapshot of suburban America in the late 60s ⬇️

JenlovesJT47 And it felt like I was there. It‘s a reminder how hard life could be for women during that time period, having little voice and being programmed to believe their sole purpose in life was to get married, have kids and be the perfect housewife while not pursuing their own dreams. The story ends rather abruptly but I still think it‘s worth reading. There are plenty of funny moments mixed with sad ones and others that are downright uncomfortable. 4⭐️ 3y
