Portuguese Irregular Verbs | Alexander McCall Smith

A deliciously entertaining new series by the bestselling author of The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency The many fans of Precious Ramotswe will find further cause for celebration in the protagonist of Alexander McCall Smiths irresistibly funny trilogy, the eminent (if shamefully under-read) philologist Professor Dr. Mortiz-Maria von Igelfeld of the Institute at Regensburg. Unnaturally tall, hypersensitive to slights, and oblivious to his own frequent gaucheries, von Igelfeld is engaged in a never-ending quest to win the respect he knows is due him. Portuguese Irregular Verbs follows the Professor from a busmans holiday researching old Irish obscenities to a flirtation with a desirable lady dentist. In The Finer Points of Sausage Dogs, von Igelfeld practices veterinary medicine without a license, transports relics for a schismatically challenged Coptic prelate and is mobbed by marriage-minded widows on board a Mediterranean cruise ship. In At the Villa of Reduced Circumstances, the final novel in the trilogy, we find our hero suffering the slings of academic intrigue as a visiting fellow at Cambridge, and the slings of outrageous fortune in an eventful Columbian adventure.

Even after all that I went through to get a copy of this silly book, it just won't hold my attention. 😅 Ugh. Oh well, the cover art is pretty and the chapter titles are amusing. Maybe I'll try it again in the future.

AlaMich I really enjoy his Mma Ramotswe series but I have found his other series to be generally silly and dull. 4y
Rachel.Rencher @AlaMich Same! It's too bad because Mma Ramotswe is what introduced me to him and I was so hopeful that the rest would be just as good. 😕 4y

Winston looks like he's mid-sentence. 🤣 I caught him tantruming.

Starting this book now! It's only like 120 pages which will be nice after the 500 page chunker I just finished.

Soubhiville These books are hilarious, if you can handle the bumbling, thoughtless, utterly clueless, and supremely arrogant main character. Good luck! 4y
Soubhiville Content warning for the next two books: unfortunate things happen to animals. Not intentionally. 4y
Rachel.Rencher @Soubhiville Oh, no 😢 I'm a sucker for animals. Will that completely turn me off to the story? 4y
Soubhiville I don‘t think anything happens in this first book, it‘s book 2 and 3. And if I remember correctly it‘s entirely because of the MC‘s ineptitude, not out of malice. I say give this first one a try, it‘ll give you an idea of what his personality is like. 4y

Ermahgerd, I'm sooo done with Amazon. I ordered book 1 of this series over a month ago, and they sent book 3. So I ordered books 1 & 2. All are supposed to be new. Book 2 shows up with the pages dog-eared & the cover torn. They send another. They say book 1 is lost, but it shows up today and has a ThriftBooks sticker on it...so clearly none of these are new. I canceled Prime a while ago & now I'm just done with them all together. 😅

Kimberlone I also cancelled prime. My bf and I have ordered the same thing on the same day and my order takes twice as long to process and ship compared to him. Their algorithm sucks. He still has prime so I can still use his benefits without having to pay for them myself. 4y
Librariana The nerve of Amazon! Really! And they don't pay those employees nearly enough. It's almost as if, in my very humble opinion, they're such a behemoth of a company that they're just like "Yeah, GOOD ENOUGH! Send her this one. If she complains, she'll return it and no sweat off our brow." ? Maddening, really. If you pay for a NEW book, as close to pristine is what you should receive. 4y
Librariana Addendum: I no longer order books from them myself. Have started ordering online (and in person) from my local indies 😊 4y

SaraFair Have you tried calling them? I have called a couple of times when items weren‘t up to par. They will accept a return almost every time, and a couple times they credited me and told me to just keep the item. 4y
Rachel.Rencher @SaraFair It worked! They said they were in fact supposed to be new, refunded the cost & told me to keep them. So, I guess I can't complain about free books. 👍 4y
SaraFair @Rachel.Rencher - I got free coffee one time because they sent me a big box of six packs and it was about to expire. Also another time I called to complain bc I got a cockroach in a box. They made the third party pay us back. 4y
Rachel.Rencher @SaraFair A cockroach?! Omg 🤢 4y
