Blackflies
Blackflies | Robert Munsch
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Helen loves springtime -- except for the gazillions of blackflies and mosquitoes. But she has a plan . . . One day Helen wakes up and it's SPRING! The snow has melted and the sun is shining. But Helen knows that the blackflies will be coming out soon. So she does what any smart kid would do: she sends her little sister outdoors to check! When the blackflies and mosquitoes carry her away, Helen tells her dad, who rushes outside and is carried away himself. Now Helen needs to rescue BOTH of them, along with a wolf and a very clever bear . . .

Mehso-so

Positives: All #Indigenous characters; Indigenous illustrator; rare portrayal of children living in a northern forest; realistic sibling relationship; appealing zaniness.
Negatives: Problem solving involves spraying "Super Strong Extra Yucky Even Knocks Out Wolves Bug Glich" directly into the faces of animals and people; digital artwork lacks finesse.
Regardless of my lukewarm evaluation, I know this ?? #picturebook will be popular.

merelybookish I know this is a bit unCanadian of me, but I do not like Robert Muncsh's books. There's always something off about the language for me. (Paperbag Princess excepted.) 7y
Lindy @merelybookish Paperbag Princess is the exception for me too. The one that is downright creepy is 7y
merelybookish @Lindy Absolutely! It and Silverstein's The Giving Tree. 🤢 7y

Lindy @merelybookish I'm with you on The Giving Tree too. Where do you stand on Rainbow Fish? 😉 7y
merelybookish @Lindy Somehow I've avoided The Rainbow Fish, so no opinion. 🤷 Is it as bad as the other two? 7y
Lindy @merelybookish Other fish are envious of his beautiful scales but he says no when asked if he will give them away (his own scales!) and then he's ostracized until he gives them all away, which leaves him an ugly but beloved patsy. The end. (edited) 7y
merelybookish @Lindy Ha! Sounds inspiring! 😛 7y

The sixteen gazillion blackflies and mosquitos picked Megan up and carried her across the road to the black spruce forest where the wolves and bears live.
'Oh dear,' said Helen. 'The bugs are worse than I thought.'
