The Elementary Particles
The Elementary Particles | Michel Houellebecq
An international literary phenomenon, The Elementary Particles is a frighteningly original novelpart Marguerite Duras and part Bret Easton Ellis-that leaps headlong into the malaise of contemporary existence. Bruno and Michel are half-brothers abandoned by their mother, an unabashed devotee of the drugged-out free-love world of the sixties. Bruno, the older, has become a raucously promiscuous hedonist himself, while Michel is an emotionally dead molecular biologist wholly immersed in the solitude of his work. Each is ultimately offered a final chance at genuine love, and what unfolds is a brilliantly caustic and unpredictable tale. Translated from the French by Frank Wynne. From the Trade Paperback edition.

The Elementary Particles | Michel Houellebecq

Sometimes he cycles cross-country, pedaling as hard as he can, filling his lungs with a taste of the infinite. He doesn‘t know it yet, but the infinity of childhood is brief. The countryside streams past.

Hmmm, I really struggled with this book. On the one hand it was really well-written,on the other hand I just felt like I wasn‘t the target audience for this book. I am however glad that I finished the book, because the last two pages of the book turned out to be the best pages. 😀#1001books #reading1001

Halfway through this one. It‘s definitely well written but it doesn‘t really appeal to me that much.

Bruno is #abadboyforlove ...well anything that approximates his distorted idea of love at least. A loveless novel with the id and ego brothers positioned at the decaying center.

LeahBergen That Wordsworth set! 😍😍 7y
PagesOfKate @LeahBergen They've just been passed on to me, my mum inherited the set from her aunt. Unfortunately the third book is missing but it's still a beautiful collection. For once my mum's hoarding tendencies have paid off! 7y

I just gave this 3 stars over on GR but that's sort of the opposite of how I felt about this book. I can't decide whether I loved it or hated it. 🤔🤔🤔 I'm giving it a pick because the writing is brilliant even if the subject matter was pretty hard to relate to. Controversial, pornographic, amusing and sad.
